We had a confirmed booking through booking.com for Christmas Eve. We were paying NZD 345 (including NZD 80 for breakfast) for one night. When we reached there, we were turned away saying they had no rooms. Booking.com was not aware that our booking had been cancelled by either party. We were left with no room, young tired kids and loss of NZD 345 on Christmas Eve! This is the background- 6+ weeks before our scheduled arrival date, a possibility arose where we might have had to cancel our stay there. Booking.com rules clearly stated there were cancellation charges, if we cancel, and balance would be refunded to us. We thought of Enquiring from the property whether the cancellation charges can be waived off, given there was a lot of time and it was peak travel season. They might easily get another booking. We were told the cancellation would still incur charges, IF we cancel. Owner wrote, she might not get another booking as it was Christmas Eve. Fair enough, still by rules. Now, in our last communication with the property, the owner asked us whether we are coming. We couldn’t reply to this mail, as we had started the trip. Our booking showed confirmed on booking.com, which means, if we don’t cancel, the property gets paid full amount of the night. Once we reached the place, my first reaction was of shock. I asked my husband, why are we paying such an huge amount for just an average looking property. But given it was Christmas Eve, we thought probably the peak season playing it up. Upon knocking the door, to our dismay, we were rudely told that there is no room for us and they were not expecting us. When we shows them the booking.com app, confirming our blocked amount and booking, We were rudely told to take it up with booking.com. And the door was closed on our face. No sorry, no help. Very rude! We left the property, first to find a possible room somewhere. With limited connectivity, we literally drove the streets to find a place to stay. After spending a couple of hours and finding an awesome place at a third of their price, we called up booking.com. Booking.com was equally shocked that our booking wasn’t honoured. My point is, if the property was indeed not expecting us and if they were fair, why not cancel booking from their end and inform us? Why not inform booking.com that we are not-responsive and hence they are going ahead with another booking? Worst case, booking.com would have charged canceled booking charges from us. But this behaviour was purely of taking undue advantage of an opportunity, hoping we won’t turn up. For us, it was not so much of not finding room there. It’s ok, if there was confusion. But a basic courtesy would have been to show us a little compassion and offer a phone or use of internet. Could have been charged, but we wouldn’t have been left helpless with young kids. I hv been to 20+ properties in NZ this trip and used booking.com many many times. Never have I seen such rude behaviour or a confirmed booking on booking.com dishonoured. Too rude! I wouldn’t recommend anyone going through this experience with this property.

The cottage is just behind the main house with pretty gardens and a garden path to it. It's actually on the main road but you don't hear the traffic. There are beautiful big trees and it's leafy. Inside the Cottage it is well furnished and we were able to cook our meals with the facilities provided which is why we booked it. The bathroom/toilet was very clean with extra towels etc. The bed was comfortable. There was a lot of stuff in the Cottage, and it felt a little cluttered to me. I'm sure it would be different for others who would probably love the homely feel, there were books to read and so on. I was worried if I put something down I might not find it again. Nevertheless, the owner had made a nice slice for us with milk in the fridge. We borrowed their old (uncomfortable) bikes which was also handy. Bike hire in NZ is overpriced. Next time we might take our own. Overall, the Cottage felt private and we were able to relax while there. We stayed for 2 nights.
