The museum was great. We then went up to Hector MacDonald's Memorial Tower, so nicely presented up on the hill in the cemetery.

An excellent local museum

This is a really fine local museum, quite a bit bigger than it looks from the street. Lots of information about local history, including a reconstruction of a blacksmith's workshop and typical cottage interior, as well as the town's earlier phases. There's a large display on the ground floor devoted to military history, especially the career of Hector MacDonald. Definitely have a look in the upstairs room too! The recently-discovered Conan Pictish stone is on display in the front window. This means it's possible to see one side of the stone even when the museum is closed, but unfortunately means the other side is silhouetted against the light from the window, and quite hard to see. It was a sunny day, though, and I've a feeling it would be easier to see in dull weather. A great little museum, anyway, and very helpful and well-informed volunteers. Don't miss the other Pictish stone in the nearby churchyard.

Really glad we went into this museum. Full of history about the area. The lady on reception was excellent.
A must see place.. I didn't make it upstairs but my husband did and he had a fright. I had my own spiritual experience downstairs.

Excellent local history

Run by volunteers from the town this small museum is packet with information from Viking times to modern day. Good military section with replica Victoria Cross display.
The volunteers have masses of knowledge and give freely of the time .

Excellent visit with Ian, we learned more about our family from him in an hour than the many years we have been visiting Dingwall!!When we told him our name he took us to some school photos on the wall and pointed out our dad and two of our aunts , lovely to see oh and Sandra who volunteers there is lovely too, well she is family after all😁

We have visited this amazing attraction on numerous occasions. The volunteer staff are always very welcoming with Ian MacLeod BEM a delightful host. The museum is still going strong thanks to see Ian's zest for telling the story of Dingwall. He also has built up a superb room dedicated to the locals who served in the 4th Battalion Seaforth Highlanders. He is a fountain of local knowledge and a credit to Dingwall. Highly recommended to locals and visitors. Thanks Ian.

A good local museum

Every town should have a small museum like this. It concentrates on the period from about 1750 onwards and
contains an excellent gallery featuring local people who were involved in the military. I was disappointed to find that it doesn't provide much information on the early history of the area which is a pity. There are a few prehistoric objects but virtually nothing from the Viking and medieval periods. Despite this it's still worth a look. Admission is free but a donation will help the museum to develop.

Very interesting

Popped in today for a quick visit at bequest of my sister in law who lives in area but had never visited. My brother and her had lovely time looking at all the exhibits.Mr McLeod (I.m sorry hope this is correct didn’t quite catch his name) was lovely and took great pride in filling us in with the local military history.

Looks impressive

We visited the town at the end of April and were disappointed that the museum does not open until early May. It looks a very attractive building which is easy to walk to in the middle of the pedestrianised High Street. It looks impressive and will try to visit again if visiting in the summer.
