Torhout’s St. Peter in Chains Church (‘Sint-Pietersbandenkerk’ in Dutch) has known a very turbulent history. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times. Large maquettes show the surprisingly different forms it has taken since the 9th century. The pointed bell tower, blown up by the Germans in World War I, was rebuilt in a different style in 1923 and restored later. The rest of the present-day Romanesque Revival building dates from the 1950s and has no historic value. The interior is bright and simple.

It was an ordinary day. We had driven several times nearby this church that last week and we decided to park our car and visit this lovely church.
When we entered I saw immediately a machine where we could buy water from. That was quite unique!
The floor was dark and it had wooden comfy chairs.
Near the main altar was a beautiful piano as well as a large organ. There were some cubes as decoration behind the altar and lots of stained-glass windows. On the side was a large painting of people suffering.
There is even a chapel dedicated to consolation.
On the right of this church, it showed replicas how the church evolved over the centuries. That was quite interesting. The first edition of this church started in 650. However, the Vikings destroyed it completely. It was rebuilt several times, until the last edition.
While I was exploring the history of this church, a man entered to clean the church. When he saw me, he said: "I can come later." "No need." I said. "It's fine." He was so nice and polite.
After we visited the church, we went for a walk in Torhout. We had fun and saw some nice sights.
We came back to our car and we discovered a parking ticket. Where did that come from? Still, Iremembered this church fondly.
I enjoyed this church. It's quite worthwhile to visit it!
