Beautiful view of the river as you hike the ridge. We didn't go all the way, took nice path back. Only problem is parking. Not much of it.

This is one of my favorite areas of Yellowstone National Park. It has everything, wildlife, open vistas, interesting geology and the Yellowstone River Canyon. The first bit of the hike is very challenging. The "social" trail goes pretty much straight up for about 150 yards. The official trail is a steady climb of about a quarter mile. Either way you are soon walking along the edge of the Yellowstone River canyon. The trail continues along for about 2 miles of fairly easy hiking. It is the perfect trail to pack a lunch and spend a few hours reveling in the solitude. It is a popular trail but never overcrowded. We hiked up past the junction with the Specimen Ridge Trail for a total of about 5 miles. The scenery and vistas were constantly changing. It is a great was to spend a few hours. This is how your Yellowstone experience should be.

This lovely picnic area is located on the Northeast Entrance Road very close to Tower Junction. It's a lovely place to eat but be sure to wander up the path a little ways to get great views of the Yellowstone River.

This is a great little hike to fit into your plans. We didn't do the whole loop; just did an out and back for as long as we wanted. This is only a mile or so east of Roosevelt. The only signage says Yellowstone with a picnic table on it. When we showed up on a Sunday morning, we were the only ones there. I would recommend bringing bear spray on this hike.

You first hike up a bit of a climb but it levels out once you get to the ridge. The whole way up, we had beautiful wildflowers and views out over the valleys. Once on the ridge, you get breathtaking views of the canyon down below and hike along the rim (I don't like drop-offs and was totally fine--there is plenty of room!) It is full sun, so keep that in mind on a hot day.

Head towards Mammoth from Tower Roosevelt junction. Look for the sign for the Blacktail Deer trailhead on the right. It is appprox 3 miles from the junction. Better check your Yellowstone Map for a more accurate distance. There is a pit toilet and larger parking area just prior to the trailhead parking area which is pretty small. The trail gradually rises past a fenced enclosure for wildlife studies. From there it is all down hill to the Yellowstone river. You walk along a stream and past basalt columns on the hike towards the river. There are campsites along the way and I saw a few Pronghorn that were close and a few bison at a long distance. The trail comes to a suspension bridge that crosses the Yellowstone with great views up and down the river. The trail continues on and goes towards Knowles Falls, again downhill. On the way I passed a couple small lakes and several bones and a bison carcass with elk antlers scattered along the trail. I enjoyed this hike as well as any in the north section of the park, very scenic with a good view of the falls. A friend of mine told me he hiked to the edge of it but I saw no easy way and left that part for the more adventurous. The trail continues all the way to Gardiner but I did an out and back to the falls. It was about 12 miles of hiking and up hill all the way back. I was 63 and in good shape but I won’t kid you, the trip back was tiring for me, not exhausted but a good challenge.

This is a great place for a moderate but very scenic hike. Trailhead starts from the picnic area - more picnic tables than parking - just 1.25 miles east of Tower Roosevelt junction. It's a loop trail of about 4 miles although we just did a shorter out-and-back along the ridge as we didn't have enough time. The best views of the river is along the ridge anyway. We didn't see much wildlife aside from marmots who seemed quite happy to pose for pictures.

Since so many Canyon trails were closed when we visited, we decided to do the loop hike here and I'm glad we did. This was gorgeous and filled with wildlife! We saw a pronghorn with 2 babies up close and lots of weasels. It was a long hike, but interesting, except for the last part when you follow along the road. We were able to see the other side of Calcite Spring and where we were earlier.

The picnic area isn't anything special but if you take the little trail from the eating area, it leads to a great view of the river.

We usually stop here at least once during every trip to Yellowstone. It's near the entrance to Lamar Valley, so the restroom comes in handy before or after nearby hikes or wildlife watching. There's shade here, too... and access to a nice hike along the rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. We've spotted bighorn sheep and goats nearby on several occasions.

It is located right beside the road, it is the perfect place to stop, relax a bit and eat a snack while admiring the winding river.
