Was one of my favorite hikes in Yellowstone
jun. 2017

My Favorite Yellowstone Hike- Some Things to Consider...
aug. 2020
We hit this trail in the late afternoon and enjoyed the diversity of the forest, the meadow, the woods, and the Yellowstone River and the bridge. If we hiked it again we would have:
1. brought more water
2. completed the hike earlier in the day when we had more energy, (you walk down to the bridge and then return up the hillside using the switchbacks)
3. brought bear spray
4. skipped the additional hike beyond the bridge
5. considered the trail ride on horseback
However, we thoroughly enjoyed the scenery, the difficulty of the hike, and taking pictures on the bridge over the roaring water.

4.5 stars - nice hike, but quite a few switchbacks.
sep. 2020
We only went as far as the bridge over the Yellowstone River as we were running out of time at the end of the day. The entire hike is beautiful, with many switchbacks near the trailhead that we had to climb on our way out. Almost immediately the river comes into view and a great view. The bridge is an excellent photo op itself. There are bears in the area, so bring bear spray.

Wonderful views, great bridge,
jun. 2019 • Gezinnen
We hiked this trail in mid-June, 2019. Parking lot had room for about 20 cars. Hike was one mile to bridge, another mile to creek, then back. First mile is all downhill, with switchbacks, about a 900 foot elevation loss, mostly through woods and meadows with lovely views. Second mile goes through a section of woods known as the Enchanted Forest, then into open fields, with much less elevation change. We passes a few ponds, saw just a couple of other hikers, then stopped by the creek for lunch. We saw a marmot in the woods, and quite a few wildflowers. Creek was way too high to ford, but it was our turn around point anyway. Intersections with other trails were well signed.

Great winter trail for hiking or skiing
jan. 2019 • Vrienden
Nice to be able to park just off the road and get right on the trail. Only downside is that you do hear traffic for a little while. There are switchbacks up and then a steady decline down to the creek (about two miles). Really pretty area. We didn't need snow shoes but spikes and poles were useful. After the bridge the trail gets narrower and seems to be more traveled by backcountry skiers (we were wishing for our skis at this point). So after about another mile and a half we decided to turn around. Nice meadows and follows the creek. Beautiful winter hike.

Awesome quick hike with great views
sep. 2018 • Gezinnen
We did this hike about 3:00 in the afternoon and it was great. A lot of the way is shaded and even a lot of the switchbacks were on the way back up due to the steep incline. We were nervous about bears in the area so had our bear spray but it is pretty open so you can see the surrounding area and we made plenty of noise. Don't let this deter you from doing this hike because it's a quick 2 mile rt hike and the bridge and swirling water below are totally worth it. I feel like this is one of the last hidden gems in Yellowstone.

Decent Hike
jul. 2018 • Gezinnen
Do this hike in the morning if possible as the trek back is all uphill. Not as bad as I thought it would be as the switchbacks provide some relief. Only went to the bridge and back. Fairly popular hike for families. Poor road signage coming from the east. Bring bug spray. Pretty cool bridge.

Had a bear run across the bridge just after we crossed over it--good hike nevertheless
jul. 2017 • Stellen
Two of my sons and my daughter-in-law joined me to hike to the river, one mile down this trail of many switchbacks that I noted as we descended since I knew I would have to climb back up as we returned (I had a knee replacement six months before). This was July 20 and we had no mosquito problems as others have described, thank goodness. However, as we left the parking lot, a fellow said someone had told him of a bear sighting close to the river, which we duly noted. We stayed close together and made noise and had a normal hike down to the river. We crossed over the bridge, marveling at the view in each direction, and my sons went on ahead a few feet on the trail, while my daughter-in-law moved off to the left. As I stepped off the bridge, I looked back and saw a black bear running full speed across the bridge towards me. I moved over to the left and shouted "Guys--BEAR!" and within two seconds the bear rushed by me and took a sharp right, away from us. I took a couple of photos of the bear-butt rushing away and then its shape as it went behind a boulder--and then of my family members staring in shock, with one son holding his bear spray at the ready but he would have had no time to use it. It happened SO FAST. We were exhilarated but a little freaked out and headed right back across the bridge and back up the trail, thinking it would be best to get away from such a big, strong creature. I checked my photo clock and it was only two minutes from when we started across the bridge until we were walking back across--I said it happened quickly! As for the hike, we saw deer and birds and butterflies and lots of lovely wildflowers too. The scenery was really pretty and we were definitely away from the crowds there. We stayed at Roosevelt in the cabins and enjoyed the meals served there in the dining room. So, take the hike but be aware that bears seem to frequent this area.

Pretty hike with wildflowers, mosquito central, Bear country
jul. 2017 • Gezinnen
OK, my husband REALLY wanted to do this hike. He was excited about the bridge, so we drove all the way over from the West Yellowstone side! Would definitely recommend more for people staying on the side by Roosevelt as it is quite a haul. It was early July and was unseasonably cool which was perfect hiking weather. The hike itself has some gorgeous wildflowers and trees and the switchback section is cool because you have a nice view of the whole meadow in front of you and the canyon below. The mosquitos were the only reason I knocked a star off - I know it's nature and there are mosquitos, but these were by far the most we encountered in a week in Island Park and Yellowstone. I waved my hands in front of my face the entire trail (we had put on bug spray so they were mostly just swarming but of course found any small spot (like my fingers on the hand I sprayed with!) that I had not applied the spray to. I also had a jacket on and tried to put the hood but did get some bites inside my hair! As soon as we got to where the trail starts to go down the side of the hill, we spotted a bear down below us. We were excited because it seemed like it was far away and we were in safe place, but it did start moving up the hill, and eventually got onto the trail and was walking towards us. We made as much noise as possible (4 of us) and it started up the hill before I really started freaking out (although i was very nervous about its approach!). Didn't even look at us, looked like it was looking for good food. Meanwhile we were swatting away the cloud of mosquitos that gathered the second we stopped. We continued on the trail since it was headed for the trailhead anyway and made sure to make lots of noise. As we descended we realized the trail actually cuts back and goes right past the thicket where we saw it hanging out for a while. Eek! Good thing we had seen it in open meadow before it had gone into the thicket. We went to the bridge, crossed it and then headed back. There were some nice views, but honestly the bridge was a little anticlimactic (maybe because we had just seen a bear?) It was super sturdy and almost too thick and high to be scary. The river was roaring there though. After taking pictures we just headed back up. Due to the mosquitos we didn't want to stop at all and we were moving very quickly, almost running, which was a pretty good workout up the hill! We made sure to make lots of noise as we came back by the meadow and thicket on the way back up. When I turned around to get another look at the good view we saw a momma bear and two cubs in the meadow we had just passed by! My hubby then admitted he thought he had heard something in the thicket as we passed by. I guess it was good we were making a lot of noise. Definitely the bears made it exciting, the bridge was so so, but honestly wouldn't do this hike again unless the mosquitos were not quite as excited as they were so maybe later in the season. If you are in the area and have a little time, though, it's a nice hike even if you just walk out a short ways and check out the view and then turn around before the switchbacks or at the bridge.

Was one of my favorite hikes in Yellowstone
jun. 2017 • Stellen
My wife and I traveled to Yellowstone for our first time in late June 2017. While researching things to do I saw Hellroaring Creek Trail and some photo's.
It looked like something we would like to do and was considered easy to moderate.
I passed the trail head on our way to visit Mammoth Hot Springs coming from Lamar Valley and Roosevelt area. The turn off leads you to a small parking area and the trail head itself.
From the trail head & after a short walk, come some pretty good steep switch backs with beautiful views. On the day of our hike the wild flowers along these switch backs were blooming and it was so nice to experience that part of the walk. I must admit I was a little concerned that when returning we would be going back up these same switch backs & at the end of our hike?
Once you get down the switch backs the trail is pretty easy and at one mile you come to the suspension bridge that marked 1/2 our hike.
We continued on one more mile and found what I guess is Hellraoring creek ford. The water however was moving way to fast for me to ever consider crossing there that day.
As for me, I loved the entire saunter along this trail, I love the area and diversity the trail offers.
Get away from the crowds and spend a few hours enjoying the park on a dirt trail.
My Tip... when we came back up the switch backs at the end of our hike we just took our time and hardly noticed any real difference heading up.
I give it a thumbs up and if I have the opportunity again I will start earlier and go a little further maybe even consider some of the loop trails that this is a part of and make an entire day hike out of it.
The 4 mile round trip should take around 3 hours to enjoy the views and chat with other hikers you may pass along the way.
