Fun hike. Switchbacks up to the top and back. My 12 year old and I got up early and did the hike in early June.
On a clear day you can see the Tetons and great views of Old Faithful.
Not too difficult. Moderately strenuous mostly bc of the incline.
Trails well marked and clear

I didn't want to spend all day driving through the park, so I picked this for a morning hike and Shoshone lake for an afternoon hike. We saw very few people. The trail was beautiful and mostly through forest, towards the top it turns into gravel switchbacks. Occasionally great views were visible between tress and the view from the top was fantastic. I would classify it as a moderate hike, my husband who is not in good shape would call it strenuous. The 6.2 miles took us about 3 hours.

This is a light moderate trail. The trail stays at a decent steady incline for the 3 miles. There are a few spots of approximately 30 yards that get steep, but then level back to a steady incline. Not a lot of views along the way. The view at the top is pretty awesome though.
If only doing a couple of trails I would highly recommend Osprey Falls trail and Hellroaring Trail first. They are awesome. Especially Osprey

I agree, you'll leave the crowds behind here! Three miles uphill tends to do that. The view from the top is not of the most famous landscape but is so broad and sweeping, with steam in the distance and dots that are bison down below, I believe it is more representative of the park as a whole than some of the other high viewpoints!

I walked this trail when the trees were fully leafed out; the trail was was very private and quiet - just the sounds of nature ... well maybe a few trucks in the distance. With trees and bushes fully leafy there were just a handful of teaser overlooks on the way up and back down, but some nice panoramic views at the top. This trail is fully natural - well worn and easy to follow, but no hand rails, board walks, or stairs. Trail head is a little east of the ranger residence which is just east of Madison junction on US 20 (west gate road); trail head is on the north side of the road - same side as ranger residence; there is a sign, but it's easy to miss. On the south side of the road between the ranger residence and the trail head is a small pull-out - enough for five or six cars to park parallel to the road; just east of the pull-out are snow gates, and just east of the gates (on the north side of the road) is the trail head. From the pull-out to the peak and back is about 6.25 miles.

The parking area is small - a pullout just north of Madison River Junction but that meant there were few hikers on the mountain. The trail circumnavigated the mountain, so although we climbed 1500 feet in 3 miles it was very doable. A portion of the trail was small stones and very narrow but again, very doable. We loved the view and we loved being away from the Yellowstone crowds.

Did this small'ish hike just for the view. Not really the best hike ever but the view was pretty nice. Added a pic.

The whole way up its just long switchbacks and the edges are all pretty steep the whole way up so you won't see any wildlife on this hike (at least not likely...). The view is pretty nice once you get to the top though! :)
