Great Spur Trail with Excellent View of the Lower Falls

I hiked the trail down to Red Rock Point from the North Rim. The trail is pretty steep with some moderate drop offs. The climb back up was challenging, but I took it slow and stopped when needed which made it fairly easy to traverse. Hiking poles were very nice to have and I highly recommend taking some. The views at the bottom were magnificent and totally worth the climb down and back up. Red Rock Point is closer both horizontally and vertically to the falls vastly improving the view. We few people taking the trail, I enjoyed the solitude and sound of just the falls. I highly recommend this trail as it’s very rewarding for only a little effort.

Spectacular

Basically straight down and straight up from the North Rim Trail, but a rewarding view of the Lower Falls. Arrive around 10AM for a rainbow in the mist if skies are clear and the sun is right.

Steep Trail, Amazing Views

Red Rock Point is accessed from Lookout Point on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. This asphalt trail drops about 600 feet from the parking lot to Red Rock Point. Be careful going down the trail may be slick in some places. The trail descends down the side of the canyon wall then make its way out to the point where you will be rewarded with amazing views. Going back up is a bit more challenging, but there are areas to stop and catch your breath. If you have done the Brink of the Lower Falls Trail, this one is very similar. If you are able, this is a great side trip to make.

Steep trail, beautiful vantage point

I only started this trail, but it was too steep with even steeper drop offs for me. My husband continued with our 8 and 9 year olds, and they all LOVED it. Barely anybody else braved it and made it to the bottom, and the view was so much better than from the top! (Great pictures!!) If you can handle steep trails, do it. But be aware that it’s not for everyone!

Provides a Great View of the Lower Falls in Yellowstone's Grand Canyon

A half mile trail from Lookout Point (on Yellowstone's Upper Rim Drive along the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone) takes you down switchbacks and stairs to the Red Rock Point Viewing Platform. This is a wonderful head on view of the waterfall -- sounds from the falls and the river below also add to the experience. The walk down is not so bad, just take your time on the way back up as it will raise your heart and respiratory rates, especially if you are not used to the increased elevation! One of my favorite views of the falls and usually a little less crowded than the view points higher on the Canyon Rim.
