I spent several nights at one of Heart Lake's backcountry campsites in September 2020. On one of my days there I took a hike around the lake with several travelling companions. My "Heart Lake Loop" was a bit different as we took an off trail route for a total of about 11 miles. The trail down the West Side of the lake provides excellent views of Mount Sheridan and Heart Lake itself. Our South side trail was mostly woodland and the occasional shore view culminating with a crossing of the Heart River. The trail up the East side passes thru mostly new growth (since '88) forest and passes by large amounts of downfall. The final part of the hike across the North Shore walks along the gravelly shore of the lake.

All parts of the hike were enjoyable. . . even if the West side was just a touch of a tree prison. ;)

The 15 mile round trip hike is actually pretty easy---not a lot of elevation change. The part that keeps you on your toes is realizing you are out in wilderness...far from roads or campgrounds. The ranger station was locked and we only saw a handful of people on our way in and out. When we got to the lake, we had 2100 acres of cool crystal water to ourselves. Caught a Yellowstone Cutthroat almost immediately fishing in calf deep water, but the wind picked up and the lake got choppy. The mosquitoes and gnats were pretty brutal in the shadows and the horse flies were bad in the sunlight. Bring good bug spray. The hike took us about 3 hours in and about 3.5 hours out. A bear had been spotted that morning and there was scat on the beach near where we fished....but we saw nothing. Bring bear spray anyway!! Did see a few deer on the hike....and the wildflowers were beautiful. It's not an epic hike like Half Dome or Bright Angel.....but it's one I'm glad I did.

Un lugar perfecto para familias con niños, para desconectar de todo, para relajarse y recuperarte del senderismo de montaña.

My husband and I hiked to Heart Lake and spent one night there. The lake itself is just beautiful and so pristine. It seems fewer people take this loop so the lake almost seems untouched.

The hike to the lake from the Heart Lake trailhead was about 4.5 hours. It is a fairly rugged trail with a lot of incline and decline. Our trekking poles were helpful. There was no climbing necessary and no stream crossings. We met one couple early during the hike on the way there but saw no others until we got to the campsite. There was another family camping at the site next to ours. The family had two children, probably 10-13 years old with them so that might give an idea of how doable the hike is. It was a beautiful hike.

I would also recommend hiking up Mt. Sheridan. We attempted too but were too tired and turned back.

Our camp site was on the western edge of Heart Lake. It was about 100 feet from the the lake. The site was beautiful with the lake to the left and Mt. Sheridan to the right. The close proximity to the lake meant easy access to water. There was a biodegradable, solar powered, open air pit toilet not far from the campsite.

We did not see any bears and only saw one wildlife - an elk or something similar to an elk - who came pretty close to our campsite before walking away.

It was a great hike and Heart Lake is so beautiful. I would definitely do it again and next time, also climb Mt. Sheridan.
