I hiked the Fairy Falls/Sentinel Meadows Trail this past September as a day hike. A buddy and I started out at the Fairy Falls overflow trailhead and before heading to Fairy Falls itself we took the much recommended spur up to the Grand Prismatic Overlook. We were a bit early in the day and significant steam was obscuring a complete visual of GP, but there was a lot of wildfire smoke in the air anyway -- still a beautiful view but not "picture perfect."

I actually saw a number of Pika on the talus slope just before Fairy Falls -- I had not noticed them when I make this hike last year. Fairy Falls was delicate and delightful -- worth the hike to see it alone. We moved on and made a quick side trip of the Fairy Creek Trail to see Spray and New Imperial Geyser. New Imperial put on a good show splashing almost continuously alongside a turquoise pool followed by yellow, orange, and green bacterial mats in the runoff.

As we continued back on the Fairy Falls Trail the trees thinned and the views (thru the smoke) expanded. Fairy Falls could be seen cascading over the hill behind us. We passes several hot springs and arrived at the junction with the Sentinel Meadows Trail. This took us West across a grassy meadow (difficult to follow in spots) once again passing several hot springs. As we climbed up and over a hill side a herd of bison came into view -- we wanted to walk out to Queens Laundry but the bison blocked our path so I'll have to return another day. As we made the approach back East we saw a Coyote looking for lunch.

Eventually we made it to Ojo Caliente and took the Old Freight Road back to the Fairy Falls Trailhead. Watch out for the bicyclists on this part of the hike! Overall we walked about 13 or so miles. Be warned that there is a lot of exposure on this hike to bring plenty of water and sunscreen if you walk it on a hot day. Sentinel Meadows can be hiked by itself for a shorter distance by starting from the North on the old freight road.

We enjoyed this area very much. The view was wonderful and we saw a bison herd in this area two days.

Turn off Hwy 191 at Nez Perce Creek onto Fountain Flat Dr. Very nice picnic area and restrooms right off 191. The drive follows along the river to a large parking area. The trail starts at this spot. A very relaxing area, the buffalo thought so too. There was a large herd along the river and just at the edge of the parking area. Lots of mothers and babies enjoying this quiet spot. Looks like a good spot for fly fishing as we saw lots of fishermen as well.

The first mile or so to the trail leads you to a parking lot overlooking the Firehole river as it winds through the meadows.

On a busy day in July it was nice to drive back here and sit to watch the river. No crowds. Just peace and quiet.

To find the trailhead for this hike, Turn down Fountain Flat Drive from The main Park Loop Road. It's South of the Madison Junction, maybe 8 or 9 miles. There's a picnic area immediately to your right, with bathrooms & picnic tables. Stay on Fountain Flat Drive & keep going, until the road dead ends. There's moderate parking there. Some room for RVs. Lots of people go down this road & turn right around & leave. There were some people fishing. There are no bathrooms here.

This hike is featured in "Best Easy Day Hikes, Yellowstone". If you decide to just do Sentinel Meadows, it's 2.8 miles there & back. This is a really easy hike, though & if you combine it with Imperial Meadows & make it a loop, it's 4.7 miles. Easy enough for families with fit children. Wear good hiking shoes - there is thermal activity not far from the trail. Bring water. This hike has no tree cover & is likely very hot in the summer!

Basically, you start past the barrier & continue on foot down Fountain Flat Drive. Cross the concrete bridge over the Firehole River. You'll pass Ojo Caliente Spring on your right. You can take a very short spur to get a closer look. After you cross the bridge, the trailhead is immediately to your right. Sentinel Meadows is flat, with not many trees. There's some thermal activity to your right on the trail.
At 1.4 miles you come to a view of the Queen's Laundry, or Red Terrace Spring. There were 2 ladies who had just come from a walk to the spring. There was a lot of steam, but one of the ladies said you can take an old trail to the spring to see the old bathing house cabin. It was impossible to see from our trail. This wasn't our first hike of the day & we still had a ways to go, so we moved on.
After you pass the Queen's Laundry, is where Imperial Meadows begins. There are a couple of stream crossings. The meadow is beautiful, & you're almost sure to see buffalo. There's plenty of droppings by the trail! You'll come to a junction to take you back to Fountain Flat. There's some thermal activity here too & we lost the trail a couple of times. Fortunately, it's pretty hard to get lost.
After we rejoined Fountain Flat Drive, we saw more people riding bikes & hiking to Fairy Falls. If you decide to hike there, it's 10.5 miles.
We hiked along the road back to the trailhead. We did see a coyote on the way back.

So, this is a heavily used trail, but we saw only a handful of people. Take it early to avoid the heat of the day. We really enjoyed it!
