The visitor center was well done with artifacts from the area. Crafters carving pipes from area stone were on hand explaining the importance of the area and pipes from the local stone to the Sioux people.
Hike the loop trail to the waterfall. Its beautiful.

Pipestone NM was a nice, short stop on an extended road trip. We learned a great deal about the pipestone at the visitor's center and hiked the trail, where you'll find a nice waterfall. An enjoyable place to spend an hour or two as you check off places on your national parks passport.

Came here on a Monday morning. Started at the front desk where the lady was super friendly and helpful. Walked around the very nice paved paths and was in awe the whole time. As an added pleasure, the trees were blooming, creating a nice sweet fragrance in the air. The waterfall is stunning. The rocks are amazing. Absolutely recommend. One of the coolest places I have ever visited. Nice gift shop too where some pipe makers were also seen working in little shop areas.

Loved exploring the visitor center for the history of Pipestone Center does great job of explaining the history and present day importance of pipestone to Native Americans.

Had a lovely nature walk on an easy trail. Very pretty scenery including a nice waterfall. We really enjoyed the visit. Pipestone carvers were demonstrating their work which was nice. Museum displays were excellent, and rangers gave great information about the area. Dogs are allowed on the trail, and they have a BARK Ranger tag for well behaved pets. Definitely worth taking a side trip off the interstate to visit this national monument.

I discovered the National Monument by accident. I was driving west on Interstate 90 and saw a brown sign and not being in a particular hurry, I decided to take a 30-mile detour to the Pipestone National Monument. My first stop was at the visitor center where I picked up a map and talked to one of the very friendly rangers. The small museum excellent and gives you an excellent overview of the history of the area. During my visit there was also a gentleman giving a demonstration on how the pipestones are carved into ceremonial pipes and other treasured objects. After spending some time in the visitors center, I hiked the loop trail through the site. The trail is relatively easy with a few steps in inclines. It is a little over a mile in length. One of the highlights of the trail is Winnewissa Falls. At the top of the Fall there is a historical plaque that commemorates the Nicollet Expedition of 1838 who rested here for 3-days and carved their name on a rock below the plaque. Those names are still visible today. The entire hike was very relaxing and enjoyable. All in all I spent about 3-hours here and enjoyed my Visit to the Pipestone National Monument.

A beautiful location to stop and appreciate nature and the history of the area. The hiking loop is nice and fairly relaxed, with only a few stairs. However, in the summer it is a warm hike with very little shade, I recommend taking a water bottle with you.
The museum area is very well done and while it's small it's pretty informative. I highly recommend stopping here if you get the chance.

I was returning with a friend --I visited here 25 year ago. She is Cherokee and had never heard of Pipestone. A great stop for families so much to learn for the past. The walk to the Falls is a must. You will not forget this stop on your trip

Nice museum about the history of the Sioux carving peace pipes from the beautiful Pipestone. You can watch the carvers working and enjoy a really nice walk on a trail. You can buy some items made out of Pipestone there. We bought a really nice peace pipe from Prairie Maiden in the town.

This was our first stop on our SW MN tour. We had a fabulous time checking out the museum which was so educational. We then went on the trail which had great signage IDing flowers and plants etc then into the red cliffs to the waterfall. Many times getting to a waterfall can be kinda boring as the waterfall is the main event but this walk was amazing weaving in and out and up and down beautiful red rocks. We liked seeing the Oracle, a face shaped rock said to guard the area. We also saw a mink while walking along the path. I would love to see this again during fall and spring!

Is Visitor Center Open? Saw June 8 2020 review. NP site says closed.

They just reopened the visit with full hours this week. (A few weeks ago it was open with limited hours.)

Yes 2 hours could be sufficient time. Watch the intro film, for sure. If you want to chat with the pipe makers, plan on more time. Many people also buy pipes in the gift shop. This could take an hour alone since there are so many choices to consider.
Depending on the weather, the walk around can take at least 30 minutes, Check with the park ranger before the walk, he/she will let you know what the walk conditions are.
