A perfect mix of old and new art work. The Chagall was my favourite but I was introduced to many new Jewish artists such as Michael Gross and Louise Fishman; and art of Jewish interest.
The painting of Gertrude Stein by Andy Warhol was inspired.
Cultural and religious artefacts spanning 2000 years were thoughtfully curated and the information was presented clearly. I was fascinated by the amulets in particular. Reasonably priced, a lift, free cloakroom and toilets made it a thoroughly accessible visit.
The shop sells original artwork, an impressive book collection, and hundreds of items from a dollar to a thousand dollars. I bought a tapestry mezuzah case amongst other things.
Can’t recommend enough.

Well worth visiting, even if you are not of the faith. The name of the museum suggests that it is all about the Jewish faith, whereas it is more a presentation of art work by Jewish artists. Almost like visiting places like MOMA.

The NYC Jewish Museum has a permanent exhibit with special exhibits. The unique V Sassoon exhibit had various portraits by S Sargent of the Sassoon family and old Jewish manuscripts on one floor. Learning about the V. Sassoon family's history from Iraq to India, shanghai, and England was fascinating. This exhibit is moving to another museum in August.

A somewhat eclectic museum that has art and artifacts, which may be tangentially or closely related to Jews. Check what the exhibits are and decide if you want to attend. We recently attended the Sassoon exhibit that was excellent. They also run a film festival and various adult and children performances. There is an admission fee.

Attended the Sassoons exhibit, which was small, but excellent.
The museum building and the store are beautiful, spacious and airy.
This historic mansion is perfect for the museum.
Exhibition was very well organized, wonderful experience.
Cannot say the same about how the rest of the museum is curated.
Lots of great creative pieces, but flow of exhibits is somewhat haphazard and not easy to follow.
Visited a few years ago and at that time collection seemed to be organized more cohesively.
It’s still of course a lovely collection from Jewish ritual items to modern art.
Overall recommend to visit and lots to see.

There are currently two exhibitions at the Jewish Museum. One, first-rate from both the historical and the artistic point of view, is about the Sassoon family, forced to leave Iraq some 200 years ago for India, eventually to end up in England, where they entered the highest levels of society. The poet Siegfried Sassoon is perhaps the best known, but there were other estimable family members. The second exhibition is a show of recent modern art with the title After the Wild, by artists whose connections to Judaism or the Jewish community is unclear. Go for the Sassoons!

My friend and I came here in the morning and spent about an hour in it. It was very nice and very clean. Since we were there in the morning, there weren't very many people there and it was quite quiet. Lots of beautiful artifacts and the Sassoon exhibit was wonderful. Highly recommend this smaller museum to anyone who wants to learn more about Jewish history or just go somewhere that isn't as popular as the Moma or Met. We also went on Saturday, which we learned was a free day!

Only saw the core exhibition on the 3rd floor. Beautiful religious artifacts and explanations
However wokeness art work is not a Jewish value and dies not represent mainstream Judaism. This is a museum attempting to blend Jews and modernist ideas, not a Jewish Museum. At least one nude painting and film clips on bizzare "Jewish" themes.

Hi Anna,
Apologies for not seeing this sooner--I hope you visited us! There is no need to pre-book a ticket for our exhibitions and the line is rarely long.

Will the exhibits be open on April 30? The website says the galleries are closed until Fall 2017.

The Jewish Museum at 5th Ave. & 92nd Street is opening in May with an exhibition about Florine Stettheimer, famous New York socialite/painter. Ongoing exhibits open. Are you sure you were on the right website.
