I love this little gem in the city. The history of this place is really something, with many notable people playing a role. Eliza Jumel was an amazing woman. We did not pay for a tour and were just going to walk around, but the cashier [for lack of a better word] offered to tell us a bit about the home and we said yes please. She did a phenomenal job and really drew us in. The exterior could use some help - apparently that is the job of the City. The interior is fabulously maintained by a historic non-profit of some kind. Hopefully the City steps up their game to ensure that this home will last through the ages.

I had not been in the Morris Jumel Mansion since pre-COVID and they had done a lot with the interior and with the interpretive story. The self guided tour is interesting when you think of the people who have stayed here including George and Martha Washington and Aaron Burr.

The house even has some of the original furniture from the Jumel family. The walls are covered with a reproduction of the original wallpaper and all the rooms have descriptions of the use of each room.

The gardens are nice but over grown and could use someTLC. They really do need a good weeding and planting. Still the mansion is very interesting to visit.

A hidden gem tucked away near a busy road in Washington Heights. Its claim is that it is the oldest house in Manhattan, although the nearby Dyckman Farmhouse is about 20 years older (but that is the oldest FARM, not the oldest HOUSE, the staff here explain! Seems to be splitting hairs slightly when that is most definitely a house...) But anyway, both are well worth a visit and are an interesting contrast with each other, one being built for working people and one built by a wealthy army colonel. I did the self-guided tour ($10) - each room is numbered but there isn't a guidebook or handout, only the information panels in each room, so it really doesn't matter what order you visit them in. I was interested in the display about the old layers of wallpaper which had been discovered during the restoration, and in learning about Eliza Jumel, who sounds like quite a formidable person! After increasing the wealth of her first husband Samuel Jumel, she then married Aaron Burr, only to instigate divorce proceedings after 4 months because she thought he was spending too much of her money!
By the way, contrary to an earlier review, there are definitely restrooms for visitors and the staff were very friendly and welcoming.

We learned of the Morris Jumel mansion from the Holzer Files on tv. We love a good ghost story and this house delivers! My husband and I were visiting NYC and decided to check out the tour. We spent about 30 minutes doing the tour of the grounds of the outside of the mansion and learning more about the history and then we moved inside for a self guided tour where you could spend as much time as you would like. We ended up spending at least an hour inside checking out the different rooms that we heard were haunted from the show. And Eliza‘s room we definitely felt a heaviness. It was so much fun I wish we could’ve been in town for the for the paranormal investigation, they were doing the following weekend. I would definitely recommend to anyone interested in history or in true haunted houses.

The Morris-Jumel Mansion in New York is like a time machine that takes you back to the 18th century. It's this old, elegant house where George Washington once hung out during the Revolutionary War. You get to stroll through these fancy rooms with creaky wooden floors and imagine what life was like back when wigs were cool. The garden outside is a peaceful escape from the city buzz. If you're into history or just want a break from modern chaos, it's a cool spot to check out.

Very interesting 1765 historical home with tidbits on George Washington and Aaron Burr as well as a 19th century female entrepreneur, Eliza Jumel. Lovely interior with astounding wallpaper. Take note of the “Aaron Burr desk.” Several of the temporary exhibitions are unique and inspiring (Revised Histories). Docents are friendly and informative. Beautiful grounds to wander and maybe have a picnic lunch? Near to Sylvan Terrace which is worth seeing too. Given what NYC offers, it is not for a first time NYC visitor perhaps, but the house should be on every historian’s “to do” list. They also have a paranormal tour that sounds intriguing.

Exceeded my expectations as other reviews on here were a bit rough. I thought the rooms were well thought out and lots of information on the families that lived here. Oldest house in Manhattan so it deserves to be looked after.

Had a great visit at the mansion yesterday with a self-guided tour. The staff was very gracious in welcoming my wife and I, and you could tell they were very knowledgeable and passionate about the mansions history.

The mansion is tucked away in a very busy area of the city and sits atop a commanding location. The many rooms are nicely appointed with many pieces of furniture specific to the mansion and are nicely interpreted.

The tour will take approximately 1 hour or so to navigate on both the 1st and 2nd floors. There is a small gift shop with some thoughtful items for purchase. A face mask will be required, as is proof of a Covid vaccination.

If you’re in the area and, especially if you appreciate and are interested in Revolutionary War era history, you should plan on making a reservation prior to your visit. It’s definitely worth a visit and can benefit from your admission dollars!!!

Support the museum staff’s efforts as they do they a wonderful job sharing the mansions history, and while you’re in the area, consider making a quick trip over to the Alexander Hamilton home, The Grange, about 2 miles away, too!

Desperate being surrounded by more modern developments, there is still a sense of history at this fine location. Easy to reach and adjacent to Sylvan Terrace

This beautiful historic mansion, which is the oldest surviving house in Manhattan, has a fascinating history which was brought to life by our excellent tour guide Karen. She shared wonderful anecdotes about the women and men who lived in this mansion as we toured The grounds and the interior which includes beautiful Empire period furnishings many of which are original to the families who occupied the home. Among the famous or infamous people associated with the house is Aaron Burr but you have to go on Karen’s tour to hear About the even more interesting women who lived there!
