This is a beautiful space. I attended a memorial service here. We all stood and listened to the speakers and the prayers. So it is available for services, but it also serves as a resting place. Come for the beautiful design.

Sadly one comes here for memorial services, which is what I did but the space is truly beautiful and a bit of a landmark. So maybe you can just sneak in and admire the design. Worth it.

When I went to a memorial here I was quite impressed with the beauty of this interior. It is really quite stunning. I'm not quite sure why anyone would come here under other circumstances, but it is a monument and a San Francisco gem.

I read about the Columbarium before going to San Francisco so we made it a point to go see it. I love history and architecture and this place has plenty of both. It is a beautifully restored building with niches in the walls and pillars filled with cremains. The niches contain not only the ashes in many different types of urns but many of them have items showing a vignette of the life of the people inside. I didn't realize you were required to call ahead if you wanted a tour, so we were only allowed access to the first floor and the second building. It was fabulous but be sure to plan ahead. I would have loved to meander through the entire building. Although I admit, my husband was a little freaked out about the whole experience, I thought it was very peaceful and thought provoking. One thing: we used public transit this entire trip, no rental car, so we took a bus to get out there. The ride was a little long but not too bad and it was a short walk from the bus stop. The only disturbing part was riding through the Tenderloin where there were people shooting up and smoking meth right on the sidewalk. Other than that, it was well worth the trip.

Peacefull, beautiful and history laden. Was to be demolished, restored with love. Stunning stained glass windows. This was well worth the trip. In a quiet area of San Fran. We were driving and there were a few car parks available. Free entry.
We were fortunate enough to meet Emmitt Watson the gentleman responsible for a lot of the restoration work. He opened up the gate to the upper levels, and left us to wander through this most fascinating place after giving us a run down on the history.
If you love stained glass windows then these will satisfy your need. The domed roof has a glass ceiling, wow!
Just walking through and viewing the momentous, urns, photographs and notes is so consuming. Photography is allowed and if you are a history buff you will enjoy fining out about this columbarium and what happened to San franciscos cemeteries.

Gorgeous building tucked away on a one block street in The Richmond. Worth it to call ahead and reserve a tour (not available on weekends), or you won't be able to see the upper floors. Nowhere near as fantastic as the columbarium in Oakland, but still worth a look.

Having heard about this place on a PBS travelogue, we had to look.
This is a classic building filled with niches containing urns of Intersting and famous people. Many niches contained mementos illustrative of interests of the deceased, E.g. martini shaker.
We were fortunate to have a private tour by Emmitt Watson, longtime caretaker-maintenance man-curator who is THE historian. No charge for to premises, but Emmitt is worth a generous tip.

The central structure itself captivates the imagination. The design almost defies description. Enter and you're walking into another world, a world of the dead and of memories of those past, forged by their loved ones in remembrance, love and respect. The silence is truly deafening, the air so still you seem to swim through it. I guarantee you won't forget your visit to the Columbarium.

Penny had seen this on a Billy Connolly TV program about death. Visiting a vertical graveyard may not be top of your tourist list but this is a lovely, peaceful place with moving memorials to the people whose ashes are here. Well worth a visit

I’m a tapophile (someone who frequents and appreciates cemeteries), so The Columbarium was an important stop on a recent trip to San Francisco. But you don’t need to like cemeteries to visit this important and unusual place, which holds thousands of people’s cremains in niches, urns, boxes, all in glass-fronted or bronze-enclosed cases. Some of the “residents" are famous, most are not. In many cases are memorabilia, possessions, notes, miniature arrangements evoking the lives of those housed here. Tiffany-studio and other gorgeous stained glass windows let the light stream into the small building, showcasing its finely-painted columns and tiled floor, gently warming you as you wander around getting to know these much-loved and honored deceased people. The staff welcomed us warmly and, though we weren’t lucky enough to get to meet Emmett Watson, the caretaker who is mainly responsible for saving the building from decay, we were treated to a spontaneous tour from one of the women who works there, who pointed out some of the many unexpected things in the niches and cases. The overwhelming sense we got is of reverence for loved ones, along with a great deal of humor and spirit in the way they’re remembered.
