Very cool little museum. You'll learn all about the sugar plantation that was operating until 2016. You can wander around outside & look at the equipment.

History lesson at Sugar Museum. Hawai’i had a long history of producing sugar for the US and this museum points out the challenges that faced that production. People came to the island from different countries seeking a better life but that wasn’t always the case. At one time there were large plantations in Maui that produced sugar cane. But after more than 100 years Maui has switched to citrus fruit. The museum is a great remembrance of the sugar cane industry and worth a visit for an hour or so.

We had some time on our last day in Maui and so stopped here before heading to the airport for our flight. I enjoy learning about history including industrial history of places I visit and was looking forward to this stop. I found the museum less well laid out and less informative than I had hoped. While I tried to look at and read most of the exhibits, I did not come away with as complete an understanding of the sugar manufacturing process as expected. My expectations were too high for this modest museum.

This museum is very small. It took us about 20 minutes. However it presents a segment of Maui’s history that is often overlooked. The sugar plant here closed in 2016. I think this is a nice short stop.

Very close to the airport so it worked out perfect as we got to the airport a little early so we were able to walk through it about 30 to 45 minutes is all you need. Displays are well done and you actually learn a little bit about how they processed sugar

The museum gives you a comprehensive view of very interesting topics:
-How the sugar cane industry used to be in Maui and the former importance of sugar in Hawaiian economy
-How was the process since planting sugar cane to harvesting and refining
-The sugar plantation life. Which were the stories of the migrant workers who moved to Hawaii to work in the plantations and how was the community the created.
The museum rooms recreate very well different sceneries, and it has original artifacts, including large machinery and vehicles from the last plantation operators, which are impressively big!
The museum staff was very kind and the entrance is really cheap. Recommended visit if you want to see other side of Maui and its past.

We were lucky to visit the museum in February before the everything came to a standstill. Often we travel to Maui and have always wondered about the giant sugar mill that you could see from one of the main highways. Just out of curiosity we decided to drive up to the mill and by luck found the museum.
My husband can tell you that I am an old school museum buff, a fun time includes interesting artifacts and unique information to go with it. This place doesn't disappoint! Is it filled with lots of interactive, light up exhibits? No. Will your children be running from room to room screaming in delight? No (I hope not, this place is tiny with lots of unique pieces). Will you learn all about how the sugar mill molded the history of the area? Yes. I enjoyed myself immensely reading and learning.
Our 8 year old also joined us in the visit and the stamp collecting was fun (think ink pad with paper at various stations). He zipped right through the place and was done in 15 minutes. If you have children that are a bit fidgety the outside yard is a great place to explore and stretch your legs. He had more fun outside looking at the giant machinery and being close enough to touch and feel the cold steel.
Overall the adults enjoyed learning about the surrounding history and the kid enjoyed the big machines and running with the chickens. If you need a place to just relax and enjoy an hour or two of land activity, pack a lunch and head over to the sugar museum.
P.S. Check website for open times.

Very small museum near the airport. You shouldn't need more than 30 to 45 mins to complete the self guide tour. The museum has a few rooms that you walk thru. Some good history on the history of sugar on Maui. There's several pieces of machine in and outside of the museum. There's also a small gift shop inside.

You will find out more about the sugar industry in Maui if you come here. An absolute must. Explore the abandoned factory across the street.

If you have 45 min to kill at $7 it’s a nice morning field trip. A bit of history, done nice old pieces of equipment of the time, friendly staff and very engaged. Not a must but if you have time...

Are there plans to this museum open since the plantation is closing?
Geschreven op 17 mei 2016
The Sugar Museum is a non profit organization. It will remain open, and is in fact planning to expand.
