The drive from Mobay to Accompong takes you through many parishes and towns and is very scenic, so if possible , stop and take pictures along the way. The area is stapled with mountains full of lush greenery . In fact, it’s post card worthy.
You must be very intentional to visit this site, but I must say that it was worth the 2.5 hr drive from the resort. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the history of the Maroons, showed us crops being grown on the land by residents such as dasheen, castor oil , and turmeric , spoke about the future plans for the territory , as well current needs of the community .
We arrived to Accompong around 4 pm on a rainy afternoon, so we did not experience the cave ( I believe if we arrived earlier this would be included) ,but the lack of the site visit did not diminish or lessen the experience .
Overall, the tour took about 1 hour, and along the way we observed residents, visited the local museum , and at the end of the tour purchased fried chicken and rice from the local restaurant (very tasty meal) . We observed the local cemetery , learned how the land and available natural resources were used to defeat the British. We also saw a sample hut that is modeled after what the Maroons use to live in, pieces of limestone rocks, listened to the history of the treaty that led to sovereignty, and felt connected to the land and history being disclosed to us by descendants of the Maroons who are actively preserving their history .
The community needs upliftment. They still do not have running water and depend on tourism to some degree in addition to local agriculture, which over 80% of resident partake in some form.
The island of Jamaica has so much to offer from an eco-tourist perspective , don’t let this opportunity pass you by . Be sure to wear appropriate shoes such as sneakers or hiking shoes . The path is very rocky.
Visiting Accompong was an experience that my family and I will never forget !! And, I had a teenager with me on the tour. I wanted to plant a seed of history in his mind, and foster the importance of knowledge about the history of our ancestors. This was honestly, one of the most memorable parts of our vacation, and we had many great moments throughout our stay.
Please be understanding that this community is remotely located, and residents are actively preserving their history with limited resources for others to experience. A lot of the history is experienced through the land and is oral, along with the archives located in the museum.
If you are looking for bells and whistles, this is not the tour for you! BUT , if you want and can appreciate an authentic, unfiltered countryside , historical experience - look no further .
Recommendations :
I would have loved to have seen and had the option to purchase souvenirs such as jewelry , local provisions such as fruits and vegetables being sold by local farmers, abengs, T-shirts… being sold to generate revenue as well as add add to the experience.
Additionally, a pamphlet with resources in the area, information that captures the history, inclusive of dates and the history of the treaty and Maroons . It would add a great finishing touch.

This is history that cannot be captured in the history books. What an amazing trip. The people are welcoming and knowledgeable about their history.

Accompong Village, MaroonTown. Although the delicious food, waterfalls, scenic views, relaxing pools, rum experience and warm Caribbean Sea made our trip to Jamaica wonderful, visiting Accompong Village or MaroonTown was THE highlight of this visit to Jamaica!
The Maroons are native peoples to Jamaica. Present day, populations are scattered throughout the island and abroad, with a large concentration here in Accompong Village. Nanny is perhaps the most widely known of the Maroons for her rebellion against the British, but thanks to our tour guide Taki, we now know that her brother, Cudjoe really masterminded and led the rebellion against the British, eventually “signing” a blood covenant, of peace treaty in 1789.
This village is quite remote, but if you are interested in knowing about the Maroon People, it is very much worth the trek (with a driver).

My family and I specifically visited Jamaica at Christmas so that we could attend this well known event on 6th January 2018. I understood from reviewing information that this community had its own currency etc.
We arrived expecting to find there would be tours around the village and residents telling you the history. We also expected to see ‘Maroons?’ To our disappointment there was none of this to be seen. I personally felt that I was at Notting Hill Carnival, everyone looking to ‘mek money’ whether it food, drink or items of clothing and gifts. I didn’t feel the real sense of our visit.
I love Jamaica to bits as this is my parents’ country but I won’t be going out of my way to visit this part of the island again.
We are all very disappointed.

Great 5 mile hike to the Peace Cave with a 30 something, knowledgeable guide. Museum was well maintained and worth a half hour. We paid 18,000J ($150) for three of us, $35 entry, $10 each for the guide and $5 for sacrificial white rum to the gods. Irked ant was worth it. Don't do the hike when its wet. Drive out of Accompong was poorly marked even when not stoned.

My second visit to Accompong and the place still holds my Interest and fascinate me! Our tour guide told us lots of interesting facts about the maroons and their victory over the soldiers and Colonial English Regime, which was good. The small museum is informative, but needs more work I think.
A tour to the Peace Cave and through the Cockpit Country would be an amazing adventure - would love to do this next visit!

I went with a friend who attends every year. What a treat! I really enjoyed seeing history on display. You have to respect the fact that the Maroons hold true to their culture and celebrate it with love. I learned so much about Jamaican history that I never knew before......and I was born and raised in Jamaica! This is a worthwhile visit.
