The place itself is beautiful. When we first arrived we were in awe of the beauty. We wanted to see the redwoods so we drove to park by the visitors center. As we were driving we seen a skateboarder with a mask on, huge red flag! We parked in the parking lot on side of the visitor center. We seen a skateboarder and he look like he was up to no good. The sign we seen as we parked, said, please don’t leave valuables in your car. Then we went to pay for parking and there was another sign warning of break ins. One of us stayed with the car and 2 of us went to report to the visitor center. First, she said it’s young kids and they are harmless. When we proceeded to tell her one had a mask on, she said, I suggest not leaving anything valuable in your car. They look for purses and luggage. They will steal any valuables and your passport. It was on us to protect our vehicle. Could care less. Needless to say, we left and won’t go back.

The Redwood Observation Deck in Portland, Oregon, is unpopular short hike that you wouldn’t know about. The journey to the deck is enchanting. The trail winds through lush greens and towering redwoods. Their immense trunks and lofty canopies are unmatched by anything I’ve ever seen before. The air is cool and crisp with the heavy scent of pine and earth. As you approach the observation deck, the trail opens up to a panoramic view. Definitely take this short hike if you have 30 minutes.

Wonderful place for an easy nature outing during the heat of summer. At the visitor's center, we were given an abundance of information, and we chose the coniferous side of things to enjoy more shade.
Many families were here mid-morning on a Thursday, but parking was easy. We also saw folks waiting for the free loop shuttle that proceeds from here around Washington Park (which we've enjoyed on other days).
We often visit arboretums, botanical gardens, etc. when traveling. Some are vast, some are well-endowed... The city of Portland has been a hot mess for several years, but this place is an oasis of long-term planning, stewardship, and simple beauty.

We walked the Holly Loop, and it was a nice leisurely walk with so much beautiful scenery to stop and look at. We can’t wait until we can come back and check out the other trails. There is a small gift shop in the visitor center where we purchased a few postcards.

A forest in the middle of the city. Here, you will be able to see the collection of typical Pacific Northwest trees, such as redwood, firs, and more. There are several trails, you can spend hours walking under the trees.

Another of the great places to visit within Washington Park with a large number of well-marked trails of varying difficulty. Highly recommended. Given the cost of the parking within Washington Park, I suggest either taking mass transit or parking outside of the park and walking inside.

Nice Park to hike, had multiple trails based on length of time, for ex: there is a 30 min trail, 1 hr trail and 2 hr trail, no admission fee, gorgeous trees, clean area, enjoyed it very much.

A beautiful place to walk and easy to spend a whole day here. There are so many trails to explore, no matter what time of year it is there is going to be something in bloom on at least a couple of trails. We spent almost a whole day here in two different sections of the park, the other part of the day was spent in the rose garden. I can't think of a better way to spend an afternoon! The flowers and green plants were so incredibly lush and we got to see several species of birds we don't see at home. The park also has endangered species of plants that most people never get to see at all. My one word of advice would be to be prepared to download the parking app for Portland if you don't already have it, it makes it super easy to find a spot anywhere in the park and just pay and walk away, you can also set a timer on your phone and pay to extend your parking without going to the meter.

Note that the arboretum is located within the larger Washington Park (as is the Portland Zoo, the International Rose Test Garden, and a few other things). So when we visited, we had parked at the rose garden and toured that first. Rather than drive (and pay for another new parking spot), we opted to take the shuttle bus within the park to the Hoyt Arboretum instead. It runs at less-than-30-minute intervals and was convenient. It appeared that they had sufficient parking at the arboretum, but I did not use it myself.
There is a small visitors' center where you can pick up maps as a starting point. They have several different trails of varying lengths and can advise you hike durations. You can also choose to hike over a mile (downhill) to the rose garden if you like.
We opted for an intermediate length hike that they said would take around an hour at a slow pace. It was slightly hilly in parts, but overall not that bad. We passed through redwood groves which were quite nice. We would have walked back to the rose garden, but had been walking all day and everyone agreed to take the bus back.
The only improvement I could suggest would be a bit more / better signage along some trails. It was easy to take a wrong turn occasionally (but hard to get lost completely).
If I returned here, I might try the longer (2-hour) hike for a change. There was no cost to enter, which was nice (other than parking fees). This is a nice place to spend part of a sunny day.

I will be there the first week of May. Will the cherry blossoms be in full bloom?

Yes, so long as they’re kept on a leash at all times. And please, PLEASE, carry a bag to pick up after them.

Are there any admission fees or such that I should know about? I am on a very strict budget and don't have extra money to spend

You can take a bus from the Zoo station up to the visitors center "Tree House". Service is infrequent in the winter for the number 63 so be sure to check a schedule or the wair can be nasty! I like the Conifer side of the arboretum in the winter because most of the Conifers are evergreen. This part of the arboretum is East of the Visitors Center. They have samples of conifers from China, India, Africa, S.America, Europe and the Pacific N. W. There are a good number of large native conifers on the flowering tree side, too (the side closer to the zoo). You'll see Douglas Fir, Western Red Cedar, Hemlock. Both sides are pretty and the trails nice. We've had record rainfall in Dec., so expect some mud. No tickets are needed. If you drive you pay for parking.
