The Mohican State Park is 1,110-acres and was originally called Clear Fork State Park in 1949. In 1966, the name changed to Mohican to alleviate confusion between Clear Fork Reservoir in Mansfield. It is surrounded by the 4,525-acre Mohican-Memorial State Forest as well. Then there is Pleasant Hill Lake, just a mere 783-acre man made lake located near Perrysville. Completed in 1936, the dam that made the lake (built by the US Corps of Engineers) is a 113 ft (34 m) tall earth-fill dam and kinda scary (think edges and ledges). Great hiking in them there woods… TY OH

The park campground was really clean, had very nice restrooms and shower houses with lots of water pressure and hot water. I really liked the sturdy fire pits with grates for cooking on, and the nice picnic tables. Overall I would rate the Park itself a 5! I would rate the tent area a 2.5 at best!
***MAJOR COMPAINTS- I booked a primative tent site to rest, relax and enjoy nature! BIG MISTAKE! I spent 3 days there and I was very disappointed in the tent sites located at the actual campground- (T-3, T-4, T-5, T-6, T-7 and T-8- the inner tent sites). There was NO PRIVACY OR PEACEFULNESS- it was like a big group tent area where you could EASILY see and hear what everyone was saying and doing! It was stressful because THERE ARE NO MARKED OR UNMARKED PATHWAYS TO MOST OR ALL TENT SITES (or at least none we could find). SO MOST, IF NOT ALL TENT CAMPERS LITERALLY WALKED THROUGH those sites listed, and unfortunately the site I stayed at. LITERALLY ALL DAY AND NIGHT LOTS OF PEOPLE -and their dogs and bikes and gear walked and rode BETWEEN MY TENT AND FIREPIT!! I even had children messing with items on my picnic table one time. At one point around 7 am one morning a young child walking with his dad stopped and tried to pull one of my metal stakes out of the ground- I was still trying to sleep and I heard his dad say "hey don't pull that out it's holding the tent down!"
In the park rules it states that you are not to go on other people's sites, however everyone still did!
A few neighboring campers and I did tell many people that they should not cut throuch other sites (especially with dogs!) -but they replied that there are no pathways- marked or unmarked- and that is very true! I did personally talk to various park employees in the store, and at the entrance building (when that was staffed), about this BIG PROBLEM but it didn't change anything. there were also people partying loudly until around 1 am one night. I should also mention that the tent sites are very close to a main road, so you often hear loud trucks and semi-trucks.
Overall the park was great (especially for camping with children), EXCEPT IN THE TENT AREA- THEY NEED TO SOMEHOW MAKE CLEAR PATHWAYS AND LET SOME OF THE BRUSH GROW UP AGAIN (like it used to be)- TO GIVE EACH SITE A LITTLE PRIVACY and help ABSORB SOME OF THE SOUNDS.

The park is lovely, well taken care of, neat trails. I’m not exactly sure if all of the cool stops in the area are actually within the park borders – the firetower, the gorge overlook, the dam, the covered bridge – but there are a lot of neat spots you can just drive up to and experience, no hiking required. Bathroom facilities seem to be everywhere you need them. The parks campground has a little nature center & a store. Both are small, but the nature center has some interesting info about the area/wildlife and the camp store has lots of decent state park souvenirs (not just the stuff you forgot to bring if you are camping but shirts, patches, magnets, etc).
Additionally, we loved the programing offered by the park. I wish they had flyers or hand-outs to better promote themselves, but they did lots of cool classes and guided activities during our week stay in the area. Check their facebook page before you visit, especially if visiting with kids!
We did a guided hike with naturalist Kyle – absolutely loved him. He gave us lots of information – stopped to talk about trees, mushrooms, the area in general -and kept us from getting lost going out to the falls. The hike itself turned out to be a little more than my mother could handle and he was amazing about setting a pace she could keep up with – stopping for breaks – and even took us on a bit of a shorter route than previously planned. He was fantastic with the two 4-year olds in our group as well, they really enjoyed him. The hike itself was beautiful – though in mid-July the falls are really a little trickle. Not sure if they are usually more “waterfall-like” than they were during our visit – but still worth hiking out to. Will say this, we started at the dam, and went out to the falls. Everywhere online this hike is noted as easy or moderate – I would say it is neither, I definitely think it’s a more difficult hike. Lots of tree roots, steep climbs, at one point a tree had fallen over the trail so we had to climb over it, and in many spots the trail you are taking is literally right on the lip of a cliff – so it’s a little iffy with small kids.
We also did the Stream Exploration class with Christine (I think I found this on the events page of the Mohican area website) and she was amazing. Again this was loved by the kids – but even the adults were learning things and it was very interactive. I was so surprised at how few people showed up – better for us, but with how good these classes are you would expect more attendance.
The other class we did was the butterfly coffee-filter craft they had in the camp stores activity room. We got there late and they still let us make the craft and my daughter loved it. We thought about staying for bingo, but it seemed a bit over my little ones head so we skipped it.
I highly recommend attending their programming!
My 4-year old also loved the gem mining activity at the camp store. Its like $6-$15 for a bag and you can choose to mine for gems or fossils or arrowheads. We did the fossils since she’s done this for gems other places, we’ve never seen fossils as an option. She got a really big kick out of it and walked away with quite a haul of little fossils for only $10.

We spent our 4th of July hiking the trails of Mohican State Park. It was so beautiful! It was a warmer day but there was plenty of shade on the trails. Beautiful waterfall and differing trail difficulties for everyone. We will definitely go back!

The park was beautiful with nice wide camper sites. Lots of options for families with and without children. The campground offers full hookup sites through primitive sites. The placement of potable water near the dump station was very strange.

We stayed here one night in order to visit friends in the area. It was no great shakes. Pool is large and closed on Labor Day. So no pool on 9/11. Store was mediocre. Staff were very laissiez-faire. No map, no rules, no tag. Grass is completely worn away at camp sites from heavy use all Summer. Shower houses are cement blocks and rudimentary at best.

Did the 2 hr canoeing trip on the river. Never saw one ranger. There were scary gross hillbillies everywhere blasting ( large speakers on the bank pointing at the river) loud gross vulger music. A lot of drunks in inflatables. As an Ohioan I was embarrassed. A shame because the canoeing was excellent, pretty scenery and well shaded after 4 pm. May try to hike or canoe again on weekday in the fall but was very disappointed on an early June Saturday.

I went here for a hike at summer camp last summer. They lost me in the park, and the only thing that kept me alive was my adrenaline guiding me out of the park. I could have fallen off any number of those cliffs. The counselors told me it was safe.

What a gorgeous park! The hiking was excellent—so peaceful and colorful along the river and with good views above and below the gorge. I liked how we could “add on” various trails to make them as long or short, easy or hard, as we wanted. I also like the variety of lodging options. We chose a tent site and enjoyed both the large quiet green space and the nearby flush toilets and camp store. But we could have chosen cabins or RVs or primitive tent sites or full-service lodge. Excellent range! They were about to hold a family Halloween weekend that looked really fun for families with kids, too.

This tent camping weekend adventure brought to you by five amazing couples, some cool pups and Mohican State Park. The tent sites were spacious however there is only one car space for each reserved area. Bathrooms with running water are in a small building not too far away from the tent sites, but a bit of a walk. The shower house is located closer to the main road and was very clean. ODNR campfire rings at each site along with a picnic table. Plenty of goodies available at the State Park store, including ice cream and frozen meats. Trail maps are two dollars each, but you can use your phone to take a picture of them, they have a copy laying on the counter. The last glacier to enter Ohio, the Wisconsinan, ended in this region providing the scenic beauty we saw. Clear Fork Gorge, cuts into the sandstone creating steep cliffs and rock outcroppings and is 1000 feet wide and 300 feet deep. The gorge is a Registered National Natural Landmark. And did you know Mohican is the Canoe Capital of Ohio? 🛶

Is there horseback riding at the park, hours of operation, cost and do you need reservations?

No, we only found one place nearby that offered horseback riding, and its not inside the park itself. They also had weird hours and didn't end up being opened when we were in the area.

Is there a section of the park that has a pavilion that’s within a short walking distance from the parking lot? Looking for a picnic area here for a small group

Goo morning. Yes, the covered bridge has a large picnic area with picnic tables, charcoal grills, and rest rooms. My wife and I hiked Lyons Falls Trail, which has a trailhead adjacent to the covered bridge, and then enjoyed a picnic at the aforementioned picnic area once we completed the round trip hike. It’s very picturesque as the picnic area provides nice view of the river.
Can you put up 2 tents on 1 camp site?

Hi. Yes they do. The groundskeepers are very kind. Pack your own wood, it'll be expensive to buy at the small store.

How far of a hike from south entrance to fire tower, covered bridge, gorge overlook and maybe grist mill? Please give distance for each location from prior location and not total for the entire walk. Thanks

Best answer is to call them. If tent camping probably better than any other.
