This house is like a living museum. Tour guide was knowledgeable and interesting. I love how the guide didn’t just talk about Percy Grainger’s music, but also described the cultural, social, and economic impact of his work and life. And they had a harmonium!!! Will be coming back with my parents for another tour!

I had been meaning to visit this place for several years since learning of it, and its proximity to our home. Finally, I did it, and it was worth the wait. Percy Grainger was born in Australia, moved to London, and finally settled in White Plains, New York. His house at 7 Cromwell Place has been kept in a state close to how it was at the time of his death, and you can almost imagine he’s still there.
The docent is very accommodating, and lets the visitor see almost every nook and cranny, pointing out significant relics of Grainger’s career. There is no formal admission fee, but a token donation is appreciated, and you must call or email to arrange your visit.
Grainger, musical genius that he was, had his flaws, some of which are hinted at in the biographical film “Passion.” Whether or not you share his opinions, tastes or values, a visit to his last house can make for an interesting and enjoyable hour and a half.
I recommend parking at the municipal lot behind the Chase bank on Mamaroneck Avenue and walking to the house, as Grainger was a man who valued physical fitness. I also recommend doing some research before your visit so that you start your tour with some knowledge of the man, his career, and his tastes.

Yes, there are a few works of art and photos on display, but the real attraction is the fact that this was the last residence of the (semi-)famous composer/pianist/researcher/musicologist Percy Grainger. If you’re not interested in the man and his life, don’t bother.

The museum (actually the composer’s last house) includes much of its original furnishings, artwork, photographs, instruments, and everyday belongings of the Graingers. Many rooms appear to have been preserved as if the Graingers were still in residence, though many items show a strong patina of age and disuse.
