We were looking forward to checking out the Lookout Tower but the road leading to the Tower was being used as a staging area and parking for the construction crew.

On our way to Beartooth pass , we saw this firetower WAAAAY up on the mountain top...I'm sooo glad we turned in to check it out. Its a fairly good climb, probably 2!/2 miles and steep in some places , but on a well maintained road. Arriving at the tower your greeted with on of the most awesome nearly 300 degree view that you have ever seen , simply amazing site. We missed it but ppl told us earlier in the day a couple grizzlies and a herd of about 70 elk passed by on the ridge just above the tower .. Picture can't capture what you can see

Why they list this as Cooke City I am guessing it is because it is the closes town, but by no means is it right near town. It is off the Beartooth Highway. If it is a n ice day it is a good one way trip. I say that as the road dead ends at the Tower so you have the same road to drive back. Some great views and picture taking points on the way . .

I don't know how many time that I've driven past this lookout. While driving over the Beartooth pass. It's so worth the drive up to it. It's a dirty road up to the tower. The view is outstanding. The main floor has information about the tower & the fire fighters that worked there. The top floor has a ranger there to answer any questions that you might have. This tower is ran off donations. This tower is on the N.R.H.P.

We stopped here by chance whilst driving the beartooth highway and were delighted we did.

The tower offers amazing 360 views for miles, and remains a watchtower for forest fires.

The highlight though was meeting the volunteers, the friends of clay butte tower i think who spoke to us about the towers purpose, and pointed out highlights in the 360 view and the scars of historic and recent forest fires

Look carefully at the sign as you turn off main road, whilst lower gate might be open the upper gate and tower is not open every day. It wasnt open Mon/Tues when we there in July.

The road itself is about 5 miles of unpaved road, but it is in good condition and felt safe, albeit RV might want to avoid.

definitely worth a stop if driving beartooth highway.

Don't bypass the Tower because of the fabulous views form the Beartooth summit. Although a washboard dirt road, was worth the dust and rumble. Although not under Forest Service management, the volunteers that were there during my visit were gracious and knowledgeable about the tower's history. Can learn about how fire locations were triangulated. SOme excellent bear photos on lower level of tower. Of course views are incredible! Its FREE....but if you donate to the upkeep you can get a neat coffee mug.

Worth the drive up the fairly steep, dirt approach road through a wild flower meadow. Panoramic views from the tower.

Just some info...When the gate at the entrance says closed but is opened...it still means closed! They will stop you about two miles up with at different gate. Almost made it!

This historical and restored fire lookout is 3 miles off the approach to the Beartooth Highway, access is by gravel road, large vehicles not allowed and although accessible by car, low ground clearance could be a problem. At 9,811 feet elevation the 360 degree view of the surrounding mountains is stupendous. The hosts are friendly and describe the history of the lookout. Vault toilet available. No fee but donations for upkeep accepted. It is very seasonal due to the climate, summer months only, suggest calling Shoshone forest service to check status.
