Just BEAUTIFUL. I appreciate Minnesota country and preservation of wildlife even more after seeing this amazing land of prairie. Windmills atop the hills blowing endlessly. The scene was poetic.

We drove through and had to pull over and stop (there is a spot with information signs). I absolutely fell in love with this place. Worthy of a visit and definitely a Minnesota gem.

Hole in the Mountain Preserve is a 1445 acre site owned by the Nature Conservancy that is on the west side of Hwy 75 (part of International Hwy 75 King of Trails Scenic Byway) south of Lake Benton, MN. The area is home to rare insects, 25 species of butterflies, over 60 species of grasses, rushes and sedges, 200 varieties of wildflowers, and 100 species of trees. In winter over 1000 deer reside here. There is a 100 foot change in elevation which provides a variety of habitats. An interpretive sign tells of the success of the patch-burn program started in 2012.

As you travel on Hwy 75 you will see several places where you can pull off and park. I was there in early June and was surprised how many wildflowers were already blooming. I enjoyed the sounds of the birds and the fragrance of the flowers as I explored the area.

As always, the Nature Conservancy has done a good job managing the area and preserving it for future generations.

I have been to this park several times at various times of the year. The park is nestled right into a ravine type area. There are lots of woods and a small creek that runs through it. There is also a LARGE hill that used to be a ski hill. From the top of the hill there is a beautiful view of the city of Lake Benton and the actual lake itself. There is a playground nearby, some areas for picnics, and camping spots.
