We had read reviews about the road but decided maybe they over react, we have a 4 wheel drive. Nope - Nothing can describe how horrible the ride up is. The lake, the restaurant, trails were great however there are others just as nice that you don’t have to endure the drive.

The long, winding, bumpy, dirt road will eventually end at the lake. We encountered 3 weather systems along the way and a beaver sitting in a pot hole on the road. Bring bug spray, lots of water. Expect no cell service and be prepared for a very long off grid day. It was an hour drive in to the lake.

This has to be the most beautiful place I've ever seen. Amazing! Every step is picturesque. The 6 mile, round-trip, trek is not particularly hard, but as Floridian flat-landers the altitude gave it some challenge. Saw children, elderly people, moms with babies on back carriers, and dogs, getting through with ease. This has to be on your list if you are in Colorado. It is a very bumpy dirt road in, so I don't suggest a economy or compact rental car. Also, don't make my mistake. When the road forks, head left for Piney Lake, and not the other way.

Hiked this on July 30 in the morning. This was an very hikeable trail (rated moderate by AllTrails, but I might call it on the easier side) with an incline of 728 ft. Beautiful views of mountains, the lake, wildflowers and aspen trees. We were a group of age 50-something adults and teenage boys. The boys hiked in tennis shoes but I was glad I had my hiking shoes. We all really enjoyed it. Bring snacks and plenty of water. We didn’t see a lot of people until we were on our way back. We stopped and had lunch at the ranch restaurant before we left, which was totally worth it. The road up and back is the most treacherous part of the trip. Definitely needed a 4x4...very rough, rocky pitted road.

It's a long, slow, bumpy dirt road drive, but a beautiful meandering hike. It's a busy trail, so be considerate. Outside of Summer months, there are no services. Bring food and water and pack out whatever you bring in.

This is a well worn trail that is easy to moderate. Be prepared to spend at least 3 hours. It is 6 miles round trip. I am so glad we went early and didn’t see anyone until we were descending . The falls were disappointing due to very low water. Late fall didn’t hinder us. Have a sturdy vehicle to brave the 1 hour (7 mile) rocky road.

As others have said, the drive from the VAIL area takes about forty-five minutes to an hour on a bumpy road. Recommend driving in a SUV. Signage is not great, so pay attention to the few road signs you see to Piney Lake. Once there, try to go to the second parking place, as it gets you slightly closer. We primarily went for the hike, so we didn't spend much time at the restaurant or gift shop. Restrooms are available.

We found the hike to be moderate, certainly not easy as some have suggested. The 6 mile round-trip hike starts at 9,400 feet and goes up to over 10,000 at the waterfalls. We saw several people that were struggling to get up and down. If you are not in good shape, then I would not recommend it. I also recommend wearing hiking shoes over tennis shoes as there lots of rocks, roots, small creeks, etc. If you are in good shape, then this is a great hike.

The hike takes about an hour and a half to get to the top, starting relatively flat and in the sun. About a mile into the hike, you begin an incline, then the last half mile you descend to the falls (which is an incline on the way back and is where we saw most people struggling). Once you get to the falls, I suggest first going to the left which is a nice area in the trees. Next go to the right, which is more of the intense falls. For the best view, carefully climb down the falls about 50 feet to look back up at the drop off. Some people we talked to went further down the falls, but we decided it was not worth the effort to go any further.

Take sun screen, water, and an energy bar, and enjoy the hike.

As many other reviewers have stated, this trail is very popular. We got there early in the morning and it wasn't too bad, but coming down was much more crowded. What a beautiful, peaceful hike to the falls! Recommended.

This is a nice hike for an entry level hiker. It takes about an hour to climb the mountain in a car. Bumpy road but it just adds to excitement of the trip up.

The lake is gorgeous with a couple of water activities. Canoe or paddle board but the water is chilly! Picnic areas with fishing.

There is a small cafe near the lake offering sandwiches, salads and local beer.

Our group of 6 included our kiddos of 18, 16, 13, and 10. As others have said, the drive out is very bumpy but we made it in our rented minivan while going slowly (45 minutes - 1 hour drive on the dirt road). We parked in the public parking outside of the ranch entrance then walked to the ranch (with the public restrooms) and started at the lake. It took us about 1.5 hours to hike to the falls and 1 hour to hike back. Relatively easy and we were able to cross without having to wade through the creeks. We underestimated the weather (it was much cooler than we expected and we got rained on most of the trip out) so I would recommend bringing a rain jacket. Be sure to also use sunscreen and bug spray. Beautiful hike - I would definitely recommend - and relatively easy.
