Short hike from parking area, nice river view, bridge, summer play in the water. For camera people like me great river shots going through big rocks, summer has emerald looking waters.

Wawona Hotel's pool is closed during COVID. When it's HOT head over to nature's nearest and coolest waterhole. High summer temps and Low running river levels are a must for safety's sake. But when those occur -often in June, July and August head here. What a spectacular place to sit, swim, drip your tired hiking toes or just bask on the smooth boulders out among the pine scented forest sun.

We walked up to Swinging Bridge twice during our recent trip to Yosemite.

From Forest Drive, we walked up the wide path. As it was after 6 pm, there were no swimmers left in this popular swimming hole.

From Chilnualna Road, we walked the longer trail to the other side of the bridge. This was a lovely early morning walk. We saw someone sitting on the rocks with their off-leash dog. Note that dogs are not allowed in this area of Yosemite NP.

Been to the Wawona area many times to walk through the covered bridge and around the historic buildings. This time we want to go for short hike and so drove past the covered bridge to the end of Forest Drive to a small dirt parking area with a restroom building. From there we walked rather than hiked along a easily navigable dirt path going upstream by the river's edge. The sound of the rapids was refreshing and the canopy provided some shade as it was at last 90F in Yosemite on the day of our visit. The bridge itself is short with just a slight swing. We returned the same way we entered.

We’ve been trekking to the swinging bridge for as long as I can remember... I’m 55 now and our first time here I was six, so next year is the big 50.
Hints: If you have a stroller, enter on the east side by the Wawona General Store, and drive to the end, where you’ll find a parking lot (unpaved). Potty here if necessary (pit toilets) as there are none by the bridge. It’s an easy, flat trail of 1/2 mile.
If you want a scenic hike, you can take Chilnaulna Falls Rd to the west of the river and it’s about 0.7 miles.
BRING A RAFT or (sturdy) rubber ring if you intend to swim. Depending on the height of the river, you can barrel down the rocks for an awesome, free water ride into the large pool below.
Personally I avoid dunking my head because, well, Guardia. It is one NASTY little bug that will have you asking the good Lord to make it stop (but if you’re into very rapid weight loss and don’t mind the violent diarrhea, heck, drink up, baby...). It’s also very transmissible, my sister’s kids gave it to my mom. UGH.
Back to the good stuff. Find out how high the river is flowing at the time you go - someone said it’s best in August, but believe me, it’s all about the snow pack. This year (2021) was a very light snowfall so the river is at a nice if a bit low level in late May/early June. August of this year you’ll barely be paddling... no rock surfing for YOU, sadly.
Other years I’ve seen the river at a crazy height, so it all depends.
The other thing about the swinging bridge is there isn’t a whole lot of places for sitting. If you have a non-swimmer and you want to set up camp for the afternoon, unless you’re early, there’s not a whole lot of good places.
It says no dogs on the sign at the parking lot, but we had our aged, blind, deaf, dementia-suffering hound (who still loves to go outdoors) in a stroller. No one said anything, but then, there weren’t a lot of people there.
Don’t forget, this is snow melt, so it’s gonna be cold, but if the day is warm, it feels really good once you get in.
You still need to keep a close watch on little ones as although the bridge has been rebuilt and is WAAAAAY sturdier than it used to be (it was BAD), it still bounces around some.
If you are staying at the Redwoods in Yosemite cabins, going to the swinging bridge once is fun, but we prefer to walk to the area about parallel to the Pine Tree Market. There’s no bridge, but it’s walkable so people can go home when they want, it’s a really nice swimming hole and there’s a big ole rock to jump off of at your own risk. Check the depth first!!
There’s room enough for several families to sit in the shade there, too. No loos.

Never been here before this time, although I've been to Yosemite many times over 60+ years. This was a beautiful spot on the Merced River, and in May 2021, the wildflowers were out.

We were staying at the Redwoods Inn in Wawona. A short drive takes you to a parking area. Then a 10 min walk to the bridge and swimming hole. It was in the 100's, so we came here frequently to cool down. Water is crystal clear and there are shady places to sit. Come early in day or at dinner time to get a good spot. This place saved us because Yosemite was so hot!

We walked the Swinging Bridge Loop from the Pioneer History Center, about 4.75 miles round trip. The bridge was short but fun. A great deal of the hike was on a paved road, (Forest Dr), returning on Chilnaula Falls Road. This is a nice place to stop for a bite to eat or to enjoy a picnic. The walk along Forest Dr was quiet, with little traffic. There was significant traffic along Chilnaula Falls Road so you might want to consider crossing the bridge again to return on foot using Forest Dr. Lots of beautiful quaking aspens and ash trees along the route. And the charming Bassett Memorial Library, a nice surprise on Chilnaula Falls Dr.

Lovely safe area to swim.
Access from Forest Drive, park at the end and then a 7 minute walk.
Quite an experience for a UK family to swim in a river.

This Swinging Bridge in Wawona really swings. When I visited in June, I walked from Chilnualna Falls Road. Usually I walk from Forest Drive on the south side of the river.

The South Fork of the Merced River was raging below this bridge. In August, there will be folks swimming, lounging, and ‘rafting’ in the river under the bridge. That’s definitely not possible in June!
