We drove by on the highway, saw the entrance gate and sign ... and made a U-turn back into the grounds. We were not disappointed.

It's a small museum of local lore, artifacts, and stories. Some outbuildings with additional displays and information. Really, all nicely done and well maintained with obvious love and care. Helpful docents provided us with all kinds of stories and info.

It was about 20 enjoyable minutes of out-of-car time. Recommended!

The other reviews here do a good job of telling you what there is to see, so I won't dwell on the exhibits. At this writing (June 2019; I visited in May), the TripAdvisor reviews of nearby Chukchansi Gold Casino outnumber the museum 80 to 4!!! I have been to the casino and to the museum one time each (on different days), and I must tell you, it is the museum I'll return to. Well worth a visit by anyone with even a modicum of interest in the area's history. Just one thing: it's not open every day (and closed in winter), and the hours are short, so you need to pay attention to when it is in operation. You'll be happy you took the trouble. The docents are friendly and knowledgeable, and the clean restrooms make for a comfortable visit. I spent less than an hour there (it was near closing), but next time I'll probably spend a good deal more time than that. Highly recommended.

Nice little Museum~ Interesting historical place
We were surprised by how small it was, but it hace many interesting stories and aritfacts to look at.
It will be a short visit because it is so small, so don't expect to spend a lot of time there.

As you pull into the driveway, the obvious reaction is "This is it?????" The main building looks small from the outside, but it's actually room after room chock full of exhibits of very local and California history. Everything is covered: pioneer life, local Native Americans, logging, the gold rush, farming and ranching, even one of the first hair permanent machines (and that's scary!). There are other building as well, just as surprising. The entrance is right next to the entrance of the Chuckchansi Casino, so don't miss it.

There are many things to see at this museum. They have things related to the local Indian tribe, the Gold Rush era, and the overall history of the area.

When traveling through the town of Coarsegold, you shouldn't miss stopping by the Coarsegold Historical Museum. The Kennedy Barn is where you are greeted by the Docents. There is no fee (but donations are welcome). You can pick up a self-guided tour book, and meander through the Barn, which houses the Native American collection, and displays about mining and local history, including a display on the Coarsegold Market. Across the parking lot (which used to be a portion of the old stagecoach route) is the Adobe, which was a stage stop for travelers before there was a Hwy 41. It gives you a glimpse of what home life was like "way back when", and even has a working water pump at the sink! Other displays in the Adobe feature war uniforms, and Tom Alberta Jones, a local legend. The Picayune School (which was used by local Chukchansi children and moved to the museum site in 1994) is a one room schoolhouse that now houses historical clothing and displays about local schools. The Blacksmith shop is sometimes in operation (though it wasn't on our visit). Finally, there is an outdoor area you can stroll to see a Native American Cedar Bark tepee, mortal and pestle in granite rock, and an acorn leaching bed and granary. Our family really enjoyed our visit, and learned a lot!
