We loved our day trip to St Helena Island with Cat O'Nine Tails Cruises.
Although we've lived in Brisbane for many years this was our first trip to this national park and historic prison site. The crew gave us an excellent presentation, in character and in costume, covering everything we could have wanted to know. We also had free time to look through the small museum on site.
Lunch was a delicious picnic.
The day entails quite a bit of walking and provision is made for anyone with mobility issues to be driven to the various presentation sites. Starting and ending the trip with a cruise across the beautiful bay adds to the enjoyment.
Highly recommended!

Don’t be 30 seconds late they will leave without you. Parking is terrible and with a 2 year old and 10month old our walk to the boat was a km away and took three times as long. We literally stood on the jetty and waved the boat goodbye even tho my mum was on board telling them we were right there. Needless to say my mother had to go alone and me and the kids went home sad. We live half hour away so was a real waste of time and money, we were really looking forward to it.

Highly recommend a visit. Very few facilities on the Island and those are basic. If you need it take it, especially lots of water, sunscreen, and insect repellant, but otherwise try to minimise weight of what you have to carry. Up hill, down dale. There is a lot of walking. From Jetty, along a Causeway then to the various places of interest, often thru grassy fields, to end up at the top area, where there is some undercover shade around the house now a Museum.
There is a small basic amenities block after the causeway, then one single Loo at the top stop on the Island.
Cool, dark clothing covering as much as possible preferable to light colours and face shading hats, tried and true walking shoes. Walking thru long wet grasses wreaked havoc on clothing of those who had worn light or white shorts etc., Mostly the soil is the red of the bay areas. Midges and Sandflies cannibalistic. Many amongst us suffered blisters on our feet, in spite of a belief we’d worn old, comfortable shoes. It was a very rainy day but my husband and I suffered sunburn to lower arms and legs, the only places exposed to the sun. Made us thankful the day was less hot and sunny than usual. Just. The rain made a few things more difficult. The Causeway turned into a Canal.
The building sites remaining and the Cemeteries are all very interesting. Our Guided Tour was excellent and the Narrators were wonderful.

The tour guide got our surname wrong and set us aside when we wanted to board asking for a confirmation email to show him...our names were on there...he just got the name wrong....the walk is up hill and was in 30 deg temps today and each historical site was left for us to investigate and then we were all herded i nto a group to stand in the stinking hot sun for 15 to 20 minutes with no shade sweltering as the tour guide told us all the stories of the island...he could have been telling the guests all this stuff whilst they were looking at the graves to start with and to save time and long standing times in the hot sun...all up hill and no forewarning of when and where our so called lunch would be so swe were all stinking hot...sweating and sore from being made to stand in the hot sun to hear the island tales...the humour from the two guides was relentless and stupid and got harder to tolerate as the climb up the hill went on and on and on and on...finally we are sat under a tree to eat a small lunch that was very basic...and made very scantily..really bad trip back on the cat of none tails boat as it had a motor issue and was dumping engine oil in big blobs all through the pristine waters all the way back to manly and that was a trip doing half the speed we should have...upon asking what was happening was told nothing wrong...they should turn the trip around to make the walk up the hill to the lunch first and improve its appearance and quantity..people are hungry after traipsing for so long up a steep mountain and made to stand in the stinking hot sun with no shade. This was a horrible experience I will not be doing again and in my lpinion is not worth the money.

This is the Alcatraz of Brisbane! How come it's not more well known?!!
It's such an interesting walking tour of an incredibly historic place.
The guides are excellent, & their "comedy show" was obviously designed to not traumatise kids, but we all got the message about the horrific experience that prisoners went through.
The ferry over to the island was comfortable & they provided a simple, though totally adquate lunch.
I'd highly recommend this as a "must do" in Brisbane

Great little tour for the history buffs. All done very well, the staff were very friendly & helpful. The knowledge of the theatrical group was in depth, delivered in a very functional way. Very hot day, brolly a good idea for those that feel the heat. No shade on the tour once you leave amenities from the jetty to the top of the hill. A little bit of walking involved to the different sites but not exhausting. Light lunch. Take water & snacks.

It local, historic and very intersting. We took the boat from Manly and enjoyed the trip and the island activites. Lunches were fresh and well organised. There is a short drama scene while you have lunch which is done very well. Its obvious that this has been well rehearesd over the years. The boat is getting a little old but it really just adds to the character of the day out.

Thoroughly entertaining day out for the family with lots to see and do. Our thanks to the excellent guides who kept us laughing and well informed about Brisbane's early penal history.

Ok - Port Arthur it isn't. St Helena is a fraction the size of Port Arthur, it held a fraction the number of convicts, it hasn't had $25m spent on restoration and it wasn't as big to start with BUT its history as a penal settlement where the convicts earned their keep producing product for sale, were mostly self sufficient, built infrastructure, is just as fascinating and educational.
St Helena is a gem only a short boat ride from Brisbane.
We went over on a day trip on the Lady Brisbane run by Brisbane Cruises.
Great trip - I would highly recommend.
We left from Brett's Wharf and the cruise down the river and across to St Helena was very relaxing and also informative.
The provide a running commentary pointing out a number of places along the river that we had not been aware were there.
OF note is Fort Lytton - another Brisbane 'sleeper' that most Brisbanites are not aware of.
Brisbane Cruises also provide a guided walking tour AND you get a BBQ lunch on when you get back on the boat = BONUS.
Put this on your To-Do list

We had an excellent family trip to St Helena Island. After crossing the Bay on the Cat O’ Nine Tails, we had a very informative and enjoyable tour of the island. The guides were extremely knowledgeable and kept everyone entertained. Our teenage kids also really enjoyed the tour. It’s amazing that all this history is so close to Brisbane. Highly recommended for a great day out.

Embarkation is at the pier at Manly onto the ferry, the trip across takes about 20 minutes and you disembark on a jetty on the island.

The ferry 'Cat'o'NineTails' leaves the William Gunn Jetty, Wyvernleigh Close, ( near the swimming pool)at Manly on Brisbane's bayside on Wednesdays and Sundays. Get there early to park and find the place. The boat leaves from next to a coffee shop. Do an Internet search for St Helena Island or phone 1300438787.

Hello there - Yes our guide told us people do come over in their own boats but there's strict guidelines re rubbish disposal etc. so contact St Helena National Park Service to view the requirements. Don't forget without doing a tour - apart from the small museum over there (check if open) you'll be wandering around the convict built remains not knowing their history and why a certain building was built; how it was done & what was it's purpose. Honestly - whether an adult or child you'll enjoy - without the stress - a lovely, inspiring experience! Regards, Jan

What is the car parking like near William Gunn Jetty for trips over to St Helena Island? We are going over this Sunday, 4th Sept 2016, which I understand is also a Market Day so am wondering how easy it will be to park.

Hi! We have discount tickets from Groupon . It was worth the money indeed . It was very interesting excursion and entertainment . Lunch was ok . Good day trip.
I see that most visitors are locals. Would this be a recommendation for us visiting Australia for our first and probably only trip?

Sorry for the delay in replying. If you are interested in history and learning about where we Australians come from then yes is is worth doing. Not only the history but our beautiful Moreton Bay is worth seeing first hand.
