Grazioso centro storico, tranquillo e ben curato.

Life in Forenza revolves around Piazza Regina Margherita it is a lovely square in the center of this untouristed little hilltop village. Our stop here was more or less to kill time between leaving Venosa and arriving at our B&B in San Fele and the village makes a great picture from the valley below it.
We parked on a street below the square and took a stroll through the side streets and took in the village and its beauty. All street eventually lead to Piazza Regina Margherita the hub of village life and we grabbed a table in this lovely little green square serviced by a couple of café/bars and orders a couple of prosecco to sit and enjoy the sunny September weather.

Forenza doesn’t see many foreign visitors and especially none that are not tied to the village through relations. We noticed a quite a few of the local elder men of the village taking an interest in my wife and I and thus began a parade of them walking by our table and trying to catch our conversation to determine where we were from and whom we might be visiting. The bravest of the lot eventually ambled over to the table and asked us who we belonged to and we explained we were travelers just taking in Basilicatan life in the small villages. He seemed rather dubious that we would venture into this locals only spot and we listed off the places we had yet to visit which impressed him enough to sit down and begin to list off the relatives and friends with relatives that were in Canada. We bought the gentleman a beer and sat and enjoyed his company while we finished our drinks he wanted us to join him for supper at his place which we politely declined. We explained we had to check into our B&B which was expecting us in the next few hours but we wished we could.

While there is not much to see there is definitely lots to experience if you wander off the beaten track and open yourself to strangers and taking the time to “smell the roses”. Is Forenza a must see destination not really but it is a great way to experience life in Basilicata and take a little break. Who knows what can happen when you travel instead of tourist you may make a new friend or be invited into a locals home. One thing is for sure these little things are the memories that you bring home and stick with you.
