My friend and I visited Rockingham Castle at the weekend. Neither of us had been there in a very long time, so we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. Having a blue badge, we were directed where to park and it was very close to the castle. There was a Civil War talk and small demonstration with a couple of soldiers and ladies who were weaving. That was a surprise to start with. We made our way through to the gardens and the view from the castle is breathtaking! You can see 4 different counties (or shires) from the gardens. The gardens themselves were beautiful with roses and lavender being the two main plants that we saw. Unfortunately, the hot weather has faded many of the plants, but the other plants easily make up for this. The toilets were spotless and we had a delicious ice cream (a bit pricey but worth it). We went into the well stocked souvenir shop and purchased some lovely items. We didn't take in the inside tour of the castle (we're saving that for our return trip!). The toilets were spotless (always a bonus!)
There was only one thing that if we were to have a moan about, this would be it. The tea shop was closed. We don't know why, but we did know about it before we left home and we had a lovely picnic instead.

This privately owned castle is quite characterful and not massively commercial, so it’s a treat to explore, if not very cheap. Great views can be had, and there’s a nice longish walk round the surrounding fields. We didn’t pay extra to see inside the castle, an I wish we had now!

Really nice house to go to great gardens with lots of roses with great views and nice wildlife walks and you are allowed to park in front of the entrance if you have mobility issues

The house interior is interesting enough, although I hardly believe that the family occupy those rooms on days not open to the public. Not a homely castle, but then I suppose castles aren't. Rather prone to rules and regulations, no photography, you will have to hold your phone barcode up to show at admission etc etc. A lot of rooms we couldn't go into (I quite understand why, but I am reviewing this for visitors, not for the family). We were in and out in about 40 minutes. Nice views.

The signage was spectacularly unhelpful. We overshot the main entrance ("Private road") and ended up in a housing estate using the supplied satnav postciode. Finding the way out by car was also confusing. And parking: you just park on the grass "in herringbone formation".

There are a few British comedies from the 1950s where aristocarctic stately home owners despise common people arriving in "charabancs" and this lived up to that image.

Coffee was an outdoor canvas shelter and a man in a burger van who would make you a coffee if you asked. (I think they were refurbing the proper coffee shop, but again I am reviewing the place as we found it on the day we visited.)

PS: Tripadvisor required me to say "Which activity did I do?" The drop-down box gave me two choices: "I don't remember" and "Other". I said "Other".

Dear Afterbrunel, Thank you for reviewing Rockingham Castle on tripadvisor. Apologies you didn't enjoy your visit. The castle is home to the Saunders Watson family and has been in the same family for 450 years. The rooms you visit on the castle tour are occupied by the family on the five days of the week they do not welcome the public inside. Our only rules and regulations are no photography or food and drink inside the castle. This is requested by the family as they wish their visitors to have respect for their privacy. This is requested also due to security concerns and possible tarnishment of artefacts inside. Admission is by an E-ticket barcode on your phone. This is more environmentally friendly as our paper waste is drastically reduced and consequently our carbon footprint. Arguably a phone is easier to present to the ticket office as you don't have to print tickets out at home prior to visitation. I'm not sure which rooms you 'could't go in to' and wanted to gain access too. We have the Servants hall, Kitchen, Great Hall, Naval Lobby, The Street, Butler's Pantry, Panel Room and Long Gallery Room available for your visitation. The only room roped off is the library as it isn't suitable for visitors to wal around. The rest of the castle is occupied by the family full time. I'm sorry to hear you found the signage unhelpful. We have two very large green signs on the roadside directing you into the castle main gate. We also have brown heritage signs on the main roadside signage points. We're sorry for your confusion on this. Rockingham Castle is owned by James and Lizzie Saunders Watson and isn't a stately home, but a once royal castle. James is HM Lord Lieutenant of Northamptonshire. He and his wife Lizzie take great pleasure in sharing their beautiful home with the public. We find it rather upsetting how you refer to this on your review given you met no members of the Saunders Watson family or Castle staff on your visit. Nathan has a modern converted mobile coffee unit, not a burger van. He serves organic coffee and light refreshments upon your request. Please accept our apologies once again and we apologise for your confusion, We look forwards to your reply and hopefully welcoming you back to the Castle in the near future, Regards, Rockingham Castle Estate office.

Impessive family owned Castle / manor with stunning views over beautiful rolling countryside
The house has a lovely homely feel with rooms used regularly by the family so did not feel as sterile as some unoccupied house
The gardens have impressive views and are well maintained and interesting

Dear Paula, Thank you for visiting Rockingham Castle and leaving a review on Tripadvisor. We're so glad to hear you enjoyed your visit. If you are wanting to visit the Castle again this year, we have outdoor theatre shows running and a tribute concert soon. Please see our website for more details and relevant dates. The Saunders Watson family really enjoy sharing their beautiful Castle with likeminded members of the public who appreciate their home as they do. We look forwards to welcoming you back to the Castle in the near future. Regards, Rockingham Estate office

Rockingham Castle is a local castle which I have only just got round to visiting. The Norman Castle has spectacular views of four counties. The Castle is still family run so there are obvious restrictions on rooms you can visit. The ‘long gallery’ is particularly stunning with incredible chandeliers. The Keep and Rose gardens were pleasant. The room guides were very knowledgable and friendly. I felt the admission price was rather high for the size of property but understand these properties rely on this income to survive.

We began with a tour of the house, the guides were engaging and informative and the pianist in the long gallery a great idea. You get to see about 6 rooms so it doesn’t take long to go round. Views from the castle grounds are super, you can see for many miles. The gardens are pretty-the roses smelt absolutely amazing. It would have been nice to have markers by each to say the variety-(owners should start selling rockingham roses in the gift shop! 😀) there is also a church to visit and 3 marked walks of varying length and difficulty through the grounds.
Only small criticisms were the Exit signs are difficult to spot and it would have been nice to see some locally made items in the gift shop.

The castles tour representatives in each room knew their history, and were lovely. They were interesting and their knowledge appreciated by all they spoke with.

The grounds are not maintained well enough to be asking people to pay to view them. Taking into account we booked to look around the castle and gardens, both were poorly maintained.

The formal gardens looked like they had not seen a gardener for some months. I appreciate that this was the 2nd week of them being opened for the season, but the gardens were at best awful. There was smashed glass in the garden. Full of weeds with no attempt at all to try and look manicured, they actually charge for the privelge of viewing weeds and mess. The lawns were nicely mowed, and the elephant yew sculptures were lovely. The Yew is trimmed twice a year we were told, so that may be why it looked ok.

The castle could do with a good clean in some parts and looks tired. The thistles placed on the upholstery, placed there to prevent visitors sitting on the seats, could and should be replaced. They are actually decaying and shedding all over the beautiful pieces they are supposed to be protecting.

The tea room was lovely. Polite, and attentive we were well looked after. The food was beautifully presented and matched by the taste. Good variety of gorgeous sandwiches and cakes.

Speaking with the proprietor Emily, Mill House tea rooms have a large following prior to being in the castle and you can see why. To put icing on the cake ( excuse the pun) , they also had fabulous music by a professional local singer. Loved the gentleness and variety of tunes which added to the atmosphere.

History is always lovely, and there is some lovely history here but there needs to be more value for the day, and the gardens were just so dissapointing.

Allow an hour , two tops and enjoy a cream tea - it is not somewhere you would rush back to though!

Dear Angel1968UK, Thank you for leaving a review on Tripadvisor of your recent visit to Rockingham Castle. We're so sorry to hear you weren't pleased with our gardens or castle. Both have a full time team maintaining them and it is seldom we receive reports of them in this condition. Rest assured they are tended to with daily maintenance so please allow me to correct your observation. We hope to welcome you back to the Castle soon, Regards, Rockingham Castle Estate office

Step back in time to a Victorian Christmas. Book ahead of time to experience staff in periodically costumes as they take you through the castle. We had a very entertaining guide. Also, take the self guided tour around the beautiful estate.

We had a great time. Booked timed ticket on line. On website there was a section re booking lunch. Contacted castle staff and booked and paid for lunch beforehand.

Volunteers in Victorian dress welcomed us to the castle. We were shown around by The Cook..who told us all about her life at the castle in 1849. She was beautifully attired in period dress. We started in the servants dining room, then through the hall seeing the butlers sitting room, the dining room and sitting room. Most rooms had well decorated Christmas trees. Then up the stairs where we saw the long gallery, and where we were met with the piano playing and sang Christmas carols. Lots of fascinating information, house decorated as if it was in the Elizabeth's era, so no glitz nor plastic decorations

Then down the spiral staircase to the kitchen and then the shop.

Lunch was delicious, hot and tasty and staff were helpful. Table booked for 12.30 and we did not have to wait to be seated.

Afterwards we wandered around the top garden with great views down the valley and then on one of the longer walks around the grounds. Could benefit from better sinage

Everyone asked to wear masks in marquee and castle and when standing up in the restaurant
