It is a charming place to visit, very quiet and peaceful. It may be a challenge to drive here, on last kilometres you have quite narrow and devious road so be careful especially in the winter season. The temperatures may be below zero early in the morning and late in the evening, so better plan your visit taking it into consideration. The church is beautiful, well-preserved and well maintained. The views are breathtaking.

Set in a deep valley this monastery is more or less carved into the rock face.
There is a functional church which is partly a cave and there is also a museum with an old printing press once used for printing Syriac or Aramaic
A nice lady by the name of Natalie will greet you in reception. Once the formalities are over you take a lift to the accommodation. (They do have a lift!)
The rooms are nice as are the bathrooms. Being January, the rooms were well heated.
Downstairs was the restaurant which served very good meals plus you could buy your own wine from the shop.
If you are religious you can attend the services in the church. If not, the monks won't bother you.
When I got up in the morning and walked out for a smoke, the staff served me a Lebanese coffee!
The views are stunning and it is all very quiet!
Great place! .

This monastery is located down a long, winding road at the bottom of a valley. Their is a museum with a very old printing press. The Cave of the Mad is interesting. The church is lovely. But the sight of the monastery built into the cliff is amazing.

As well as visiting the monastery we stayed here overnight in the guests' accommodation. This was for one night as part of a group tour. Beforehand we were warned that it would be very basic but we found it was perfectly nice, the sort of thing you'd expect when you book an en-suite single or twin room at a youth hostel. Our twin room was a decent size, clean, and had a good bathroom with hot water.
We had both dinner and breakfast at the canteen. It was very home-made but quite nice, and we were not short of food. The breakfast items were basic but perfectly fine.
Before breakfast some of us sat in the church while the monks did their morning mass which was a great experience. The rest of the monastery was interesting to look around as well. Unfortunately we had dreadful weather during our visit, but despite this the surroundings were beautiful.
I would definitely recommend a visit, and if you have the opportunity to stay overnight I would recommend that also.

The only Qadisha Valley monastery which you can reach by coach. Last 3 km are really difficult for the driver, but then you reach a real osais of peace and silence... It gets crowded on Sundays as there are various religious services being held. Monastery itself - you can visit a grotto and the church partly carved in the rock. Being there visit the exposition including various tools, utensil, books (some of them in Arameic/Syriac) and the oldest printing machine in Middle East. Do not miss the story of the abbot who hit the Ottoman governor who stepped against the Maronite Order.

The monastery is in a beautiful location in the Qadisha Valley. The air is clear and the atmosphere one of peace. This is a working monastery, where you may see the monks walking around. There is a beautiful church as well as a rock church. You can go hiking in the area if you wish, however, we arrived by car.
Leave feeling refreshed.

Deir Mar Elisha?
