I recently attended two weeks of classes at Cultura Italiana in Arezzo and would recommend this school to others who are interested in attending an Italian language school. A few years ago I attended an Italian language school in Bologna but this time I wanted a different experience. Bologna is a large, bustling city and the school I attended was on the large size (for schools of this type). This time I wanted to go to a city that was smaller, more intimate and yet not so small as to be boring. I also specifically wanted to go to a school where the class sizes would be smaller. In my experience once you get more than six or eight students in a class then the quality of the experience goes down significantly. Cultura Italiana met my expectations.

The advantages of this school: (1) small class sizes. They advertise that they deliberately keep classes small. When I was there (in May of 2019) the first week in my class there was the teacher, myself and a student from Denmark. The second week we added two more students (one from Japan and one from Croatia). (2) Our teacher was great. His knowledge and enthusiasm for his language was obvious. (3) Every week there are two or three planned afternoon activities, These activities are conducted in Italian but are designed for students of all levels. (4) The city of Arezzo is itself an advantage. In my mind there is nothing in Arezzo that will blow you away. But the town as a whole adds up to this very charming, interesting place to be, with something new to be discovered every day. And the shops and restaurants are not so overrun that you don't have a chance to talk with the people who work there; these people aren't burned out on tourists. Actually, when it comes to tourists in Arezzo it seems that the largest group of tourists may actually be Italians themselves. English is widely understood in Arezzo but whenever I was out in public, alone or with other students, all that had to be said was that we were in Italian language class and needed to converse in Italian and whoever we were talking to was happy to continue the conversation in Italian. (5) I found the school director, Paolo, to be very responsive to inquiries and requests for assistance or direction.

The school will arrange accommodations for you based on your preference. I chose the option of staying with a local family and found this experience to be invaluable.

Most of the schools I researched have the same policy regarding the amount of time you spend in class: if the number of students falls below a certain level then the class time is reduced by a certain amount; the idea is that you're getting more quality time when there are fewer students. The best illustration of this might be when it comes to the talking portion of class time. Both of the schools that I attended (Arezzo and Bologna) used games or role playing of some type or other to stimulate students talking to each other in Italian, usually in pairs. While in Bologna, with the larger class size, the teacher could try to spot check the various conversations to see if proper grammar was being used but most of the time we were on our own. However, in Arezzo, with the smaller class sizes, the teacher was right there and could easily monitor the conversations and give instant feedback; I found this very valuable. If the possibility of reduced class time is of concern then you could contact the school to see about adding a bit of private tutoring after regular class time.

Bottom line: I do recommend Cultura Italiana.

I just spent two wonderful weeks at La Cultura Italiana and am eager to plan my next trip. I have studied the language for more than six years and was ready for a full immersion experience, which the team at Cultura Italiana provided in spades. The placement test that Paola provided ahead of time was a great tool for putting me in the right level and my teacher, Antonio, was knowledgeable, patient, and kind. He customized the lessons to students in the class (two of us my first week, three of us the second) and his methods of teaching new material and extending previous lessons were very clear and helpful. (I have been a teacher for 20 years, so know teaching talent when I see it. 😊) Everyone on staff was friendly and engaging. The organized outings in the afternoons were also wonderful and our guide, Roberto, was fantastic. He is super knowledgeable, very patient, and has a great sense of humor. Each location was charming and fascinating. My only regret is that I didn't extend my stay another week!

I was a student at Cultura Italiano Arezzo for seven months. I started at an A1 level and had progressively moved up in the courses. The school is an optimal location in the center of Arezzo and very easy to find. I think one of the best parts about the school that I was unfortunately unable to take a part of regularly because of work, are the after school activities and outings that they host. The teachers are absolutely amazing and most of the classes are completely immersive (frustrating sometime but in the end very helpful). The school helped me in getting my study visa so that I could stay for a longer period and was always willing to work with me. Special thanks to Paula and Laura. Vi voglio bene!!!

My husband and I enjoyed a week long class designed for beginners. We had a great time and we learned a lot. We were surprised to discover there would be homework (the tension between vacation and school), but found the homework really added to our learning.
After just one week we were able to have real conversations in the next two weeks of our vacation. We are now continuing with lessons via Skype.
The school found an amazing apartment for us right in the center of Arezzo. The apartment was great and the location was fabulous. The school has access to a wide variety of accommodations - take advantage of them.
It was a fun and useful start to our visit to Italy.

I spent two weeks at Cultura Italiana in Arezzo and had an excellent experience. The school itself is very good. I have been to several schools like this, and I think this has been the best one. My teacher really seemed to care that we got it right, which is not always the case. She was very patient, very friendly, very positive, but got on our case sometimes too if she felt we were being especially dumb. I was very pleased overall with my teacher.

As a single traveler it is important to me to be able to meet other students, make friends, and do things. I had an excellent experience in this respect also; most days I had enjoyable lunch or dinner partners and made a couple of real friends.

The school arranged for a room in a shared apartment. There was nothing very special about it, but no real problems either, and it was VERY inexpensive. I am satisfied about this also.

I liked Arezzo itself. It is big enough to be interesting, but not overwhelming, and is NOT a tourist destination. Most of the people you meet are locals, and there are lots of restaurants full of local people getting a reasonably priced meal. There are several interesting towns/cities nearby that you can visit by train or bus after school or on the weekend; Arezzo is a good location for this.

So overall I am enthusiastic about my experience and will probably return.

I attended a two-week intensive course at level B2/C1. The first week there were two other students in my group and the second week three. The level of the other students matched wonderfully my own level, thus creating an optimal learning environment. The lessons emphasized improving the command of spoken Italian, which was exactly what I had hoped for, not forgetting lessons on grammar, listening and writing every day. Our teacher was a real professional, having the capacity to create a lively discussion among the students on varied themes that were of interest to everyone in the group. The learning materials used were also very good.
In addition to the lessons during the morning hours, there were extracurricular activities in the afternoons almost every day, including guided visits to local museums, a tasting of wines at a vineyard, a cooking class, viewings of Italian movies, and seminars on varied topics. I really enjoyed all of these and they taught me a lot about Italian culture and gave me a chance to practice my Italian.
My wonderful family accommodation was organized by the school and gave me a chance to have a glimpse into real Italian living.
The town of Arezzo itself is a good place to learn Italian, as it is neither too big or too small, and has a good mix of places to go, good restaurants, and it is within an hour’s drive or train ride to Florence, Siena, Perugia, and other places.
Finally, the overall atmosphere at the school was fantastic, all the people at the school were very nice and they immediately made me feel very welcome.
I’m sure to return to Cultura Italiana Arezzo!

My husband and I live in Arezzo and wanted to brush up our Italian grammar, so we decided to take advantage of a 20 percent off offer and signed up for a month of classes at this language school. Overall it was an extremely disappointing experience. The enrollment was so low that they only had two classes, beginning and other. As a result, the class was far too basic, but we had paid in advance so we kept attending. The teacher the first week had no control of the class and did nothing to stop two of the students (in their 50s and old enough to know better) from dominating the class, shouting out answers to every question, talking over other students, and engaging in long monologues. After 45 minutes of the teacher and one of these disruptive students arguing about a 5 euro fee for an optional outing, another student shouted basta! but the argument went on. Every day for a month the first hour was spent on the question "what did you do yesterday" which was intended to be conversation practice but was boring and repetitive. The rest of the class was spent going through handouts without anything added by the teacher. We had four different teachers in the month, none but the last was good. Claudio, whom we had for only the last three days, was great. If you could be guaranteed his class, it would be worthwhile. The optional additional outings were a movie in a small crowded room, appertivi, a group outing to Poppi or Anghiari, and a cooking class. The cooking class was great, the other offerings were not much.

Dear Nancy, we are truly sorry to read your negative feedback because we were under the impression that you had been satisfied with the course. However, we would like to thank you both for your time and for sending us your opinion. It is always very useful to know what our students think of us and it helps us improve and keep doing better and better. Nevertheless, there are some aspects which I would like to highlight and clarify because I do not think that they are quite correct. First of all, your criticism catches us by surprise since on several occasions your husband openly expressed his satisfaction about the teachers as well as the teaching method comparing it with others you experienced in other schools. Moreover, on his last day here he brought us a beautiful bunch of flowers and thanked, also on your behalf, Giulia and all the staff for the pleasant time you had had at the School. Why all these compliments if you were not satisfied? As regards your proficiency level, we can confirm that from our evaluation of you during the course your knowledge of the language corresponds to the level B1, namely the class you were in. From our board based experience, the grammar knowledge of a student does not always correspond to his/her ability to communicate effectively. Taking all this into consideration, when somebody is not happy with the class they are in, we are always willing to listen, understand what the problem is and suit their needs. At Cultura Italiana Arezzo students’ satisfaction is one of our priorities. However, if the level of the class you were attending was too easy why didn’t you speak to either one of the teachers or Giulia? It would have been a pleasure for us to satisfy your request and give you the opportunity to try a higher level course which is what happened, as you might remember, with one the students from you class who, after the first 2 lessons, decided to change and move up to the B2 level. In fact, during the four weeks you were here, there were not just two levels as you wrongly reported, but actually four: A1,A2,B1,B2. We are also sorry about the negative opinion you expressed regarding the afternoon activities which you never took part in except for the film in the first week. I would also like to thank you on Claudio’s behalf for the compliments you paid him about his undeniable professionalism, but I think I should also say something in defense of the other teachers who are equally and highly specialized in teaching the Italian Language. Our staff is made up of teachers who have the DITALS II certification and whose professionalism and teaching skills have always been recognized and appreciated by our students. Proof of this are the great feedbacks we have received so far and especially the fact that many students come back to our School year after year. The directors and staff of Cultura Italiana Arezzo are however sorry if your experience was disappointing.

Three weeks at this fine school in Arezzo; real improvement in my italian with Paola's team. The teachers are highly qualified and friendly. It's so stimulating to learn with fellow students from other cultures, often coming from quite far away. Various origins but all speaking a common language, italian. Excellent complement of cultural visits in Arezzo and around.
