Church full of works of art. Also known as the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli.
Next to it stands the convent of the Friars Minor Observant of San Francesco built in 1552. In the thirteenth century there was already a church dedicated to Sant' Angelo but it was demolished by the Spaniards to build the defensive walls of the city. The Spanish military commander Ferrante I Gonzaga had this church built to replace the one demolished and gave the job to the architect Domenico Giunti.
The Baroque facade is a riot of bas-reliefs and statues of various saints.
In the churchyard there is a bronze statue dedicated to San Francesco.
Latin cross interior with a large single nave with two rows of side chapels, one more beautiful than the other.
The ceiling of the nave is barrel vaulted, in the large altar that divides the nave from the transept a solemn Coronation of Mary by Legnanino from the end of the 17th century is painted.
In the transept there are other chapels: the Brasca chapel decorated by Ottavio Semino. The chapel of the Crucifix and the
Chapel of Franciscan Holiness.
The presbytery is decorated with a vast cycle of frescoes by Camillo Procaccini, who also painted several canvases in the side chapels.
What makes this church unique are the 19 noble chapels, eight on each side on the main nave and three facing the transept.
Built over the centuries by patrician families and guilds of the city.
First chapel on the right dedicated to Santa Caterina d'Alessandria with a copy of the canvas painted by Gaudenzio Ferrari in the fifteenth century, kept in the Brera art gallery. The side canvases are instead by Antonio Campi from the sixteenth century.
Second chapel on the right dedicated to San Carlo Borromeo with seventeenth-century canvas by Mozzarone.
Third chapel on the right dedicated to San Francesco with works by the Fiamminghini (this nickname indicated the works of the two brothers Giovan Battista and Giovanni Mauro Della Rovere) from 1595.
Fourth chapel on the right dedicated to the Marriage of the Virgin.
Fifth chapel on the right dedicated to San Matteo with paintings from the last century
Sixth chapel on the right dedicated to San Luca with seventeenth-century gilded stuccos and paintings from the last century.
Seventh chapel on the right dedicated to San Gerolamo or of the Sacred Heart with stuccos and frescoes by Ottavio Semini from 1565.
Eighth chapel on the right dedicated to Sant'Antonio da Padova with frescoes by Simone Paterzano, the first master of Caravaggio. Statue of the saint from the sixteenth century, dome frescoed by the Fiammenghini from the sixteenth century.
First chapel on the left dedicated to San Michele Arcangelo with decorations by Panfilo Nuvolone from the seventeenth century. Panfilo is the father of Carlo Francesco and Giuseppe, exponents of the Milanese Baroque.
Second chapel on the left dedicated to San Diego di Alcalà with works by Procaccini.
Third chapel on the left dedicated to San Pietro di Alcantara with frescoes by Morazzone and Giambattista del Sole.
Fourth chapel on the left dedicated to Sant'Agata and San Omobono with paintings from the eighteenth and last century.
Fifth chapel on the left dedicated to St. James the Apostle or Durini chapel. Harmonious example of Lombard Baroque with stucco decorations and frescoes in harmonious representation. Works by Giuseppe Rusnati , Legnanino , Giovan Battista Sassi and Castellino. All works financed by the powerful Durini family of Monza starting from 1697 .
Sixth chapel on the left dedicated to St. John the Evangelist with a canvas from 1598 by Giovan Battista Galeano and frescoes from the second half of the eighteenth century.
Seventh chapel on the left dedicated to San Francesco di Sales with the tomb of Antonio Sormani.
Eighth chapel on the left dedicated to San Giuseppe with paintings by Procaccini.

Chiesa davvero molto bella e ricca.

I did not expect this building, this church, to be so impressive. First of all, it is huge, and it make you feel very small... but in a good way. It's style is different, and it is considered as an important example of 16th century Milan architecture, no longer built out of brick and so many of the older churches.

It is in great shape.

We helped some custodians move some scafolding.

Unfortunately, we did not get a chance to pray.

At least we helped.....
