Warning to all visitors...the Predatory Parking Fines Company set up by the castle say that if there is no signal to pay and if you cannot get the machine to accept coins or card, you must leave immediately, but by the time you have made all that effort to pay, you will probably have outs-stayed the permitted time for driving in and out and they will fine you anyway. Castle Trustees: You are totally missing the point. I was unable to get the machine to work, not trying to evade £2 payment. My preferred method of payment is by RingGo app but it would not work, so presumably no signal. Neither my daughter nor I could get the machine to work to accept coins or card, all of which I had ready. It was dusk and so signage was not clear. I am not from the area and saw no media campaign; I did not see cameras, but none of this made the difference…I was unable to pay. Visitors to the castle deserve better than to be fined.

I have just had to challenge a parking fine unjustly issued by Minster Baywatch when I was unable to pay the parking fee at Whittington Castle by mobile phone app, card, or coin. My adult daughter and I simply could not get the machine to work, and another person confirmed to my daughter that the machine was not working. As they have clear pictures of my car number plate, they must also have clear pictures of me taking considerable pains to pay. I am aggrieved as a visitor to the Castle/Parish, I could be subject to such a trap being set for me. I have not had a reply as yet, but I am well aware of private companies behaving dishonourably in order to extract money from unsuspecting victims. We stopped briefly to get a takeaway coffee whilst on a long journey from Dorset to North Wales and are gutted that what should have been a beautiful experience is now a ruined memory.
Other Reviews confirm that the machine does not work reliably. The instructions are not crystal clear. I have asked the Parish Council and the Trustees of the Castle to monitor the fines Minster Baywatch is issuing. I am interested to know who benefits from such fines…Whittington Parish Council, the cafe at the castle, Whittington Castle Preservation Trust, as well as the predatory parking fine company, Minister Baywatch?
I have written to Whittington Parish Council, The Castle Trustees and the cafe at the castle, to say that the action I want them to take is to contact Minster Baywatch, their Parking Fine Company, and tell them that their visitor and customer has been unjustly fined and ensure that they withdraw the penalty notice with immediate effect. The penalty notice is £100, so I suggest that anyone fined does the same in order to protect others as well as yourselves. If you get no justice, you might contact The British Parking Association. You may consider not visiting at all as you are at risk of being fined and will need to expend a great deal of time and effort in righting the wrong. I shall put up another review if I get a satisfactory answer from all those concerned.

A lovely ruined castle with a cafe within, free to visit however it is £2.00 to park and although the visit might only take 30 minutes, it can be combined with a visit to the pub opposite.
There is a moat and a duck pond very nearby and Whittington Castle is something the village should be proud of.

Scam car park beware!
Went here and parked up to find payment machine not taking card payments due to a known village Internet problem...
Had no phone so unable to ring and pay...
Stayed for 30 mins and just received a £60 fine even though payment machine faulty!!
Phoned castle manager Catherine who said nothing they can do apparently..
Soooo much small print on signage...even on the side of payment machine...
Thanks for a RIP off day

Be very careful where you park when visiting the Castle. Hidden cameras have been installed & if you can't work the old & unreliable parking machine, you will get a nasty letter from a parking company demanding £60 going up rapidly to £150. There is no warning when you enter the car park so once yr in, you have to pay or else!
The people running the castle need to sort themselves out PDQ otherwise visitors will go elsewhere. No one likes being scammed!

A lovely castle,with a cafe & a little shop.
You can buy 50p duck food & feed the many ducks.
There is also a book shop,with the well in it.

We stopped off here to walk round the castle grounds and grab a coffee in the cafe.
The castle is quaint but steeped in history with information to hand. We loved the ducks in the river / moat and fed them whilst we were there.
As for the cafe, it was such a pleasant experience. The staff were friendly and the coffee and cakes delicious.
Well worth a visit.

Lovely castle with loads of history and a tea room if you get hungry with good basic food and friendly staff, also has events and is used as a wedding venue. The local area has lots of history including an iron age hillfort less than 3 miles away.The castle hosts medieval history events and multi period events through the year starting soon. They have antique fairs and car boot sales on the weekends. Great fun for all.

We stopped here for an hour or so. The castle is picturesque with its moat and wildlife. There is a lovely cafe here, which was a great surprise, as well as a gift shop, book shop and public toilets. You pay £2 for the car parking. You don’t need to spend a lot of time here, and it’s best to combine a visit with something else in the nearby area too, in order to make a nice day out.
